Special Session on Steel Bridge Bid in Leavenworth
County commissioners met in a special session to receive twelve bids for a steel bridge over the Big Cottonwood River in Leavenworth. The Security Bridge Co. of Minneapolis won at 8675.00 with completion by October 15, 1912, but County Auditor refused to sign due to a $6000 fund shortfall. The board also reviewed ditch No. 16 and two new bridges in Bashaw with Joliet Bridge Co. proposed payment for substandard work, and approved state road payments and grade work on Roads No. 2 and No. 1 east of Sleepy Eye and Springfield respectively.

Death of Fred C Zechunke in Mankato
Fred C Zechunke of Mankato died at home from Brights disease on Monday after a sudden decline following a June head injury. Born February 23 1871 in Altend Germany he had moved to Minnesota as a youth and built a decorate and paint business with contracts for large buildings. He leaves a wife five children two sisters and three brothers with Mason and Modern Woodmen memberships and life insurance. Miss Oline Galena returned to Columbus Ohio after visiting to study German.

Park Concert Cancelled By Rain Then Rescheduled For Next Week
A Park Concert by the Reg. Reg. Band planned for Sunday evening was canceled due to heavy rain and threatening weather. A program is set for next Sunday evening featuring marches, overtures, waltzes, and a variety of selections by Mendelssohn, Barris, Sarrentino, and others, with an intermission after 15 minutes. In Olivia a tragedy was reported: Miss Cora Wolff and her father were found dead with bullet holes and the murderer died by suicide. The inquest verdict follows the events linked to Miss Wolff's rejection of a suitor named Corey, who was expelled from the house.

Fire Department Receives Relief Fund Apportionment Check
The city fire department received 722.40 from the State Treasurer as an apportionment to the Relief Association fund. The relief is from a 2 percent tax on premiums held by local fire insurance companies and will be disbursed for the relief of sick injured or disabled members and their widows or orphans, and for department equipment and maintenance.

Violent thunderstorms hit the city causing outages
Capricious weather brought two fierce storms that struck around 9 and 10 PM with heavy rainfall and vivid electrical displays. A lightning bolt struck the Koehler home, wrecking the chimney and stunning the family. Lightning plus power lines caused outages at the Northwestern depot and damaged a grain stack belonging to Anton Stetten. A tree at 122 South Front Street was splintered and said to require removal. Telegraph and railroad service reported no disruption.
