The Denver Democratic gathering greeted Rep. Rich mond Pearson Hobson with derision as he urged a strong anti war plank. Hobson warned of inevitable war with Japan, citing vast military buildups and timelines, while critics ridiculed his warnings and the crowd demanded lighter entertainment.
In St George West Newton German Catholics celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of St George parish. Rev Potek presided with high mass as Rev LeSage led the service joined by multiple visiting priests. A banquet followed and the event resembled a homecoming with many clergy attendees from nearby towns.
A large bloc of Minnesota Republican newspapers revolt against Judge Mills as a candidate, arguing he was nominated against the people’s wishes and amid corporate influence. The Duluth Herald questions how they can oppose Mills but accept Jacobsen, both chosen by the same convention. Dunn defends Mills, while Albert Lea and other papers dispute the claim that editors are “venomous curs.” Prof. Kunze and Miss Kunze discussed their father’s estate, noting Kunze’s Brown County roots and Bryan’s electoral prospects, as do remarks about Jacobsen.
Gottfried Kuehnel, born 1828 in Halle Saxony, died at eighty at his Lafayette area home. Acknowledged as a longtime Nicollet county settler, he served as justice of the peace and county commissioner, led ferry work, and fought in Capt Roos militia during the Indian outbreak. He leaves six children, including Herman, Gustie, Louise, and two in-laws in New Ulm, plus in-law families across the region. Funeral held yesterday with Fred Pfaender’s address.
The piece endorses John Cutting as a well known Democrat candidate for re election as superintendent of schools. It critiques Republican publicity tactics for campaign contributions as optional and potentially suppressive, noting Taft and Bryan debates and a Louisville Courier Journal quote about a rejected publicity bill by the Republican national convention.
