Hubbard The postponed Pine Lake basketball tournament ended Monday night with Steamboat Rock girls top New Providence 49 to 38 and Radcliffe boys 238 to 19. The girls led in the third quarter after a close first half while Radcliffe fought a tight contest, edging ahead by small margins each period before stalling late to secure the win.

Corn Belt REA Group Receives $5.8 Million Loan
The Corn Belt Co-Op, including Hardin and Franklin REA units, is allotted a $5.8 million loan by the government. Eleven member units plan a new steam plant at Humboldt and construction of 300 miles of 69kV transmission lines to substations. Project completion is set for 1951.

Mercury Hits Zero Tuesday in Harsh Winter
Charlie Gilbert records a record cold spell in 1947 with the mercury hitting zero for the first time that winter. He notes farmers managed to raise a surprising amount given the conditions. Ice and sleet heavily damaged telephone and electric lines from Iowa Falls to Mason City and Bradford to Hampton. Central States and REA crews worked nonstop, with up to 16 hours daily for four days, restoring many services by Monday morning. Ice thickness reached about 1½ inches, causing many breaks and some lines to burn.
