Townships Name Committees For European Relief Drive

Fifteen Hardin county townships plan a farm to farm visit to raise funds for the Christian Christmas European relief drive. The Hardin county committee includes Mrs Maurice Cook New Providence chairman H V Snyder Iowa Falls president of the Hardin County Farm Bureau and Marion Rains New Providence chairman of the County Interchurch Council urging every family to give a Christmas contribution.

Steamboat Rock and Radcliffe Are Winners

Hubbard The postponed Pine Lake basketball tournament ended Monday night with Steamboat Rock girls top New Providence 49 to 38 and Radcliffe boys 238 to 19. The girls led in the third quarter after a close first half while Radcliffe fought a tight contest, edging ahead by small margins each period before stalling late to secure the win.

Corn Belt REA Group Receives $5.8 Million Loan

The Corn Belt Co-Op, including Hardin and Franklin REA units, is allotted a $5.8 million loan by the government. Eleven member units plan a new steam plant at Humboldt and construction of 300 miles of 69kV transmission lines to substations. Project completion is set for 1951.

Alden Students Raise Money for Red Cross

Mrs. James Crotty of Iowa Falls announces Alden school students have turned in about 20 dollars for the Red Cross. The North Hardin County Junior Red Cross chairman noted the contribution during the period.

The Junior Auxiliary girls will hold a candy sale Saturday morning at Bessman’s store. Donations are welcome and may be brought to the same location.

Goodyear Opens New Service Center in Iowa Falls

Goodyear opens a new service center in Iowa Falls this Friday in the former Mac Clelland Gilbert garage east of Kinsey Chevrolet. Bob McLaury is manager with tire service including pick up and delivery for farm tires, wheel balancing and brake service. The front retail area will stock Goodyear tires tubes auto accessories and General Electric Crosley appliances. McLaury brings Des Moines experience. Worth Conder Roy Faught and Wendel Daniels join the staff along with local personnel.

Mission Becomes Full Church In Wednesday Ceremonies

Rev. Sidney Werkema’s Christian Reformed Mission in Iowa Falls was formally organized as a full congregation by the classes committee on Wednesday evening in the basement of the under construction North Main Street church. Consistories from Wellsburg and Austinville attended, J. Van de Keist preached, twelve confessed faith, and new members included Otis Tripp, Lester Winter, Jennie Ann Bulten, Edward Arends, Edwin Arends, Harm Faber, Tony Ites, Romaine Abbes, and Julius Heikens. Ladies' Aid served refreshments.

The Ft. Dodge firm Harold Shoemaker employs to move a large house from Estes and Fremont to 218 Washington reports weather slowed progress. After placing two more layers of block, the house will be lowered onto its new foundation once the move over the foundation is completed.

Hauser Re-Elected Chairman of Hardin AAA Committee

Walter E. Hauser was re elected as chairman of the Hardin County AAA Committee in the Iowa Falls office on Saturday December 6. The meeting also named vice chairmen regular members and alternates across township units including Steamboat Rock Radcliffe Alden Hubbard and Eldora with multiple offices filled by Hauser Dobbruns Schager and Arends among others.

Mercury Hits Zero Tuesday in Harsh Winter

Charlie Gilbert records a record cold spell in 1947 with the mercury hitting zero for the first time that winter. He notes farmers managed to raise a surprising amount given the conditions. Nine inches of snow have fallen this winter with ice, sleet, and snow coating about an inch deep. December through February listed as winter months by the weatherman.

North Hardin County Red Cross elected officers for 1948 at the annual meeting in Iowa Falls. Appointments include chairwoman Mrs Vern Newton and treasurer Carl Mansdorfer, with officers from Iowa Falls Alden Buckeye and Ackley. Williams Legion To Present The All Star Wedding Play

Williams Williams Legion Post presents The All Star Wedding at the Williams Opera House on Saturday December 13 after a postponement due to Thursday. The show features home folks talent and a dance with Fuzz Lindquist after. The cast lists many named roles and entertainers led by Butler Barney Willie and Bride Slim Ratke with a long lineup of character names and solid local names. Iowa Falls native Paul Howard leaves Iowa Falls Monday after accepting a promotion to Service Chief for the Northwest Bell exchange at Bode. He will relocate housing once found in Bode or nearby towns. Howard has served twelve years with the company and spent the last three years in Iowa.

Mrs Walter Hugh Laird died December 9 at 6 20 p m in Ellsworth hospital Funeral services are scheduled for Friday December 12 at 2 o'clock at Scott Funeral Home.

Ice and Sleet Knock Out Telephone Lines Across Region

Ice and sleet heavily damaged telephone and electric lines from Iowa Falls to Mason City and Bradford to Hampton. Central States and REA crews worked nonstop, with up to 16 hours daily for four days, restoring many services by Monday morning. Ice thickness reached about 1½ inches, causing many breaks and some lines to burn.

Buckeye Pupils Plan Waste Paper Drive

Buckeye school pupils plan a waste paper collection to fund Junior Red Cross activities. Principal Mrs A Rodgers directs the drive. Funds from the sale will buy gifts and educational boxes for foreign children, and albums showing Buckeye student life will be exchanged with foreign schools.
