Owner Julius Bernstein accused of refusing to negotiate pay, discouraging union membership, and failing to fund union benefits. $10880 due by July 15. ILGWU Local 198 previously represented workers. decertification occurred last December. Bernstein unhappy with ruling but did not say if appealing.

Keefer Named Red Cross Adams County Chair
Clarence P. Keefer of New Oxford will retire next week as county superintendent of schools and was elected chairman of the Adams County Red Cross chapter at a board meeting. He succeeds John F. Foy of Gettysburg, who headed the chapter since last fall. Mrs. Earl Bowen of Gettysburg was chosen vice chairwoman. The vote was by acclamation after Col. Thomas H. Allen presented the nominating committee report. Keefer praised chapter gains and its improved community image during his tenure.

Rope Replaced On Center Square Flag Pole
Albert Smith a retired steeplejack living on Berlin Road replaced the ropes on New Oxford's 100 foot flag pole in Center Square last Thursday. He climbed about 75 feet to fix the loose rope while residents watched, though some passersby missed the hazardous climb due to tree foliage. Smith had performed the repair four prior times in past years.

Auto Crash Injures Mrs Evelyn Smith Near Bonneauville
At 6 30 Wednesday morning Mrs Evelyn E Smith of New Oxford Route 2 was taken to Warner Hospital after a two car collision at a Mt Beck Road intersection two miles north of Bonneauville. Her car, driven by husband Harry E Smith, ran a stop sign and collided with Howard E Hankey's Gettysburg Route 1 car. Damage was estimated at 200 for the Smith car and 300 for Hankey's. State Police from Gettysburg investigated.

The New Oxford sixth Art and Craft Show merged with a history exhibit despite rain drawing an estimated 3,008 attendees. More than eight exhibitors showcased arts and crafts and antiques, with apple butter making and quilting attracting crowds. Winners in the art classes were named by the Chamber of Commerce, and the event, aided by local groups, ended around 9 30 p m with plans for the 1963 show already forming.

Fire damages workshop in East Berlin basement blaze
A basement fire at William H. Lerews Water Street workshop in East Berlin Sunday around 1 30 pm caused several thousand dollars in damage before East Berlin Fire Company controlled it in about an hour. The fire started in the woodworking room and spread to the basement, with heavy smoke upstairs. Firefighters feared spreading to an adjacent building with storage and ammunition. The July meeting of the New Oxford Fire Co will be held Monday July 2 instead of the usual first Wednesday the month.
