Gettysburg prepares for the centennial observance drawing about half a million visitors to Adams County starting Saturday. Over 300 Pennsylvania State Policemen will manage traffic and order during daily events led by a July 1 parade at 1 p.m. Governors from nine states attend with a welcome by Gov. Scranton at the Peace Light Memorial.
The 40 hours devotion at Sacred Heart Basilica closed Sunday with sermon litany and a clergy procession. Rev. Joseph Daniel preached each evening. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas McGough led the litany and benediction was given by Very Rev. Msgr. Rodney Emler. numerous pastors and priests attended.
New Oxford Sons of Union Veterans Camp join Adams County visitors in reenactments marking the 100th anniversary of Civil War battles. They perform at Hanover on Saturday and Gettysburg on Tuesday July 2, with a concurrent pageant by the Gettysburg SUV camp. Paul Evans of New Oxford will appear in a seven- sketch history series, portraying a Confederate soldier in Friendly Enemies at Spangler's Spring daily 9 am to noon July 1-4.
Final preparations for the fourth annual Immaculate Conception Parish picnic at Adams County Fairgrounds between Abbottstown and East Berlin. Friday 6 to 9 p.m. fish fry. Saturday July 6 3 to 8 p.m. chicken barbecue. dancing nightly and a modern dancing contest with trophies. Rides and stands for all ages. public welcome.
Mr and Mrs John G Grove Hanover 4 receive a daughter at Hanover Hospital last Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Richard M Hoover New Oxford R2 welcome a son last Wednesday. Mrs Gene Bowser Barer adds a daughter Thursday at Hanover Hospital. Several other couples from Hanover East Berlin Gettysburg and York report sons and daughters born this week with hospital details.
The Midway Fire Co announces mortgage burnings for its engine house and new pumper. Total payments of $3,906 in May and $40,147 over 17 months funded the debt with help from the Welfare Department. A public open house and stag supper are set for July 14 and July 12 respectively.
The East Berlin borough council will hold its regular monthly meeting Tuesday at the borough hall Fourth Street with Scoutmaster Dicks in charge. East Boy Scouts will start lampout at Camp Conewazo over the weekend, with events at 8 p.m.
Local notes list June and July happenings in New Oxford and nearby towns. A 11th annual Percy Alwine family reunion is set for July 4 near Spring Grove with Mr Alwine turning 82, while Mr Amos Little marks his 80th birthday on July 6. Also noted are birthdays, visits, school moves, and factory vacation closures affecting post office hours on July 4.
A Saturday show sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce drew a record crowd from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Exhibitors came from as far as Connecticut, prizes were awarded for water color and oil categories, student divisions excelled, and local bands and crafts demonstrations added to a festive atmosphere.
The Adams County Public Library announces bookmobile stops for the coming week with routes including Bonneauville Brushtown McSherrystown and Mt Pleasant. Readers can participate in a guessing game about bird weights and win prizes such as an Alligator coat and a Champ hat during afternoon stops.
Vacation Church School at Hunterstown will close Friday after a two week session. A Friday 9 to 11 class ends with a rehearsal and picnic. Seventy four students will receive certificates and awards during Sunday 11 13 a m service at Great Conewago Presbyterian Church.
East Berlin Mire Company committee plans a July campaign to raise overhead for the annual firemen carnival from July 30 to August 3. The event will be at the fire hall with meals in the auxiliary and rides from a carnival company to attract visitors despite street construction limiting parades.
The New Oxford borough office will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays instead of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as previously announced. This change corrects the earlier posted late afternoon closing time.
The state Highways Department will open a 15 mile bypass of Gettysburg this Friday in time for the centennial observance of the Battle of Gettysburg. The $8 million project relocates Route 15, with four interchanges to York, Hanover, Baltimore and Taneytown, and is built for future expansion to four lanes.
Mrs. Roy W. Gifford announces two cast changes in Vignettes of History for the Gettysburg centennial program July 1 to 4 from 9 AM to noon. John Korver will replace Robert Trostle as General Barlow in Life Saved by a Gentleman. Da Tuckey takes over as General Robert E. Lee in A Valiant Revival Noble Man. Performances occur in Pitzer's Woods near Confederate Ave Gettysburg, north of the Eisenhower farm access.

The Hanover area marks the Bicentennial with a busy slate. A parade, state police rodeo, and multiple open houses highlight the weekend. Reenactments of the Battle of Hanover and various exhibits at local venues draw thousands, including visitors from 16 states.
Charles Edwards was installed as president of the New Oxford Lions during the regular meeting at the Altland House Abbottstown. Elected to the slate were Char Rohrhaugh first vice president Wayde Stover second vice president William Stock third vice president secretary Gules B Staub treasurer Alenis Stock tail buster Robert Dockey directors for two years C Robert Slewhter Willy Rife and Rev John La Burle. After the meeting members enjoyed golf at the Red Top course. The club's annual steak dinner will be at the New Oxford Red and Gaia Club with Robert Donohue Bart Kaiser and Henry Stark in charge of arrangements.
New Oxford Girl Scout Troop 747 accepts registrations for annual swimming lessons at Hagerman’s pool from July 29 to August 2 and August 3. Open to boys and girls ages seven and up, buses depart New Oxford Square at 8:45 each morning. Register with Mrs. William Milkar at IMA 44-6588 for a fee of $1.
The July meeting of the New Oxford Borough Council is scheduled for Monday evening at the borough office at 19 N. Bolton St. The session opens at a stated hour.
