Schools Prepare to Open for 1963-64 Term

Area schools set to open September 4 welcoming about 2,842 pupils with 287 starting school for the first time. Enrollment shows a rise of over 60 from last year. East Berlin Elementary adds one new teacher while York Springs, Fast Berlin gain replacements. New courses include sociology basic mechanics mechanical drawing and business English workshop. Adams County Near Debt Free Status With 55 000 Remaining

Adams County nears clearing its debt on the new county home after paying 20 000 of 75 000 still owed. The county has already funded most construction from savings and federal funds, with a goal to finish the remaining 55 000 within a year. The county also recently cleared 228 000 borrowings and expects no short term borrowings in 1965.

Six Adams County and Franklin County administrators and fifty four teachers took part in a two day Special Education Teachers Workshop ending with a Gettysburg Battlefield tour. Miss E L Rutledge led morning sessions as workshops with psychologists and supervisors prepared to close with further meetings. New Oxford Area Merged School District Opens New Year

The New Oxford Area Merged School District will open Tuesday with an orientation and in service for faculty. Students report Wednesday at 8 30 a.m. and the day ends at 2 p.m. Cafeterias will serve meals and bus schedules match last year. First grade bus loading aims to assign numbers on arrival. High school enrollment 622 with 685 at elementary for 1 307 total, up about 60 from last year. New teachers include Jean Robert and others. high school staff names include Robert Weibley and James Behm.

Bermudian Springs Joint Schools Open After Summer

Bermudian Springs Joint School System plans classes for Wednesday September 4. High school enrollment reaches 571, up 40 from last year, with York Springs 402 and East Berlin 325 at the elementary level. Total system enrollment 1 298, up about 25. New high school teachers include Sue Reaser English Merle Millhimes music and Thomas Schreiner health science who also heads the football program. A home economics position remains open as new elective subjects are introduced for senior high students.

New Oxford Parochial Opens 1963 64 Term With Mass

New Oxford Parochial School Immaculate Conception opens Wednesday September 4 for the 1963 64 term with Mass at 3 a.m. Enrollment reaches 252 with 37 beginners led by new teachers Sister Claude Marie Sister Mary Thomasella and Mrs Joyce Crow. Piper seeks dealer input for November Agronomy meeting

County Agent Thomas E F Piper asks seed and fertilizer dealers in Leeds County to mail their topics by September 16 for discussion at the November 8 Agronomy Dealer meeting at The Ranch in Chambersburg. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. He requests answers to what agronomy information is most needed and what questions dealers are most frequently asked. Abbottstown Fire Company responds to woods fire at Pigeon Hills on Tuesday afternoon. Patrick F. Yeager of 515 Main St McSherrystown is in a nine week basic training course at the Naval Training Center Great Lakes Illinois.

New Oxford Jaycees Host Intercharter Visit and Rifle Safety Project

Five Lemoyne Minner Chamber members toured New Oxford Jaycees at their refinished fire hall on High Street during the Roll the Barrel event. Hanover Chamber President Jack Sheetz presented a new gavel to New Oxford president Hebert Poist while National Director Morton Rosen spoke on Jaycees operations. The New Oxford group outlined a Shooting Education project for youths ages seven to 14 and noted an ongoing fund drive.

Widow Finds Social Security Funds Due in Adams County

A seven year old Adams County woman learned she could have claimed widow’s pension from Social Security after her husband’s death in 1960. An investigation by the Chambersburg office found she would have qualified if she had applied within 12 months. She will receive several hundred dollars retroactive and continues to receive $40 monthly. Paul Dunham urges others over 82 or dependents of workers to check with the Chambersburg office for benefits.

House Destroyed In Pigeon Hills Fire Near Abbottstown

A house owned by Wilbur Mays burned in Pigeon Hills near Abbottstown late Sunday afternoon. The vacant dwelling was torched to the ground with an estimated loss of 3500 dollars. Abbottstown firemen led the response with help from East Berlin and New Oxford crews. County Fire Marshal John Murren investigated the blaze.

Albright Family Reunion Held at St Jacobs Church

The 37th annual Bernard Albright descendants reunion takes place at St Jacobs Church on September 8 at 2 pm. Rev Laverne Rohrbaugh of Biglerville is the speaker. Activities include games for children and refreshments.

New Oxford Lions Club Meets at Altland House

Civic Improvement Committee led by James Quickel arranged last evenings Lions meeting at Altland House Abbottstown. Secretary Giles Staub announced the district governor evaluation period runs from September 1, 1963 to April 30, 1964. The next meeting is set for September 11 with Ernest W. Baldwin in charge of citizenship and patriotism efforts.

Borough and School Authority settle drainage dispute

At a 4th informal meeting last Thursday evening the New Oxford School Authority and borough council agreed to close a drainage outlet on school property to stop roof and surface water from entering the borough sanitary sewer system. The drain was plugged after a council test showed water entering the sewer. Authority members and council debated access and cementing the outlet, with plans to cement the drain in place. Attendees included Higinbotham and Wagner, along with other authority and council members.

Hanover men charged with reckless driving and unlicensed driver allowance

Tank Explodes at Aero Oil Plant After Spark Ignites Tank

The New Oxford Fire Company was called at 12 30 to extinguish a blaze at the Aero Oil Company plant Lincolnway East after a spark from a steam jenny used to Gean out an empty gasoline line storage tank ignited fumes and caused the tank to explode. No injuries occurred and damage to the jenny was slight.

The New Oxford borough council will hold its September meeting Tuesday at 6 PM. The session was moved up to Tuesday because Monday is Labor Day.
