Adams County Near Debt Free Status With 55 000 Remaining
Adams County nears clearing its debt on the new county home after paying 20 000 of 75 000 still owed. The county has already funded most construction from savings and federal funds, with a goal to finish the remaining 55 000 within a year. High school enrollment 622 with 685 at elementary for 1 307 total, up about 60 from last year. Widow Finds Social Security Funds Due in Adams County
A seven year old Adams County woman learned she could have claimed widow’s pension from Social Security after her husband’s death in 1960. An investigation by the Chambersburg office found she would have qualified if she had applied within 12 months. She will receive several hundred dollars retroactive and continues to receive $40 monthly. Paul Dunham urges others over 82 or dependents of workers to check with the Chambersburg office for benefits.

House Destroyed In Pigeon Hills Fire Near Abbottstown
A house owned by Wilbur Mays burned in Pigeon Hills near Abbottstown late Sunday afternoon. The vacant dwelling was torched to the ground with an estimated loss of 3500 dollars. Abbottstown firemen led the response with help from East Berlin and New Oxford crews. County Fire Marshal John Murren investigated the blaze.

Borough and School Authority settle drainage dispute
At a 4th informal meeting last Thursday evening the New Oxford School Authority and borough council agreed to close a drainage outlet on school property to stop roof and surface water from entering the borough sanitary sewer system. The drain was plugged after a council test showed water entering the sewer. Authority members and council debated access and cementing the outlet, with plans to cement the drain in place. Attendees included Higinbotham and Wagner, along with other authority and council members.

The New Oxford Fire Company was called at 12 30 to extinguish a blaze at the Aero Oil Company plant Lincolnway East after a spark from a steam jenny used to Gean out an empty gasoline line storage tank ignited fumes and caused the tank to explode. No injuries occurred and damage to the jenny was slight.
