Beatrice Marie Miller 20 of Spring Grove RD left a note blaming her husband for taking their three children and ended her life by hanging in the family woodshed near Stoverstown. The body was found by Mrs. Lizzie Shumaker after she entered the shed during a social call. Miller admitted taking the children. The coroner and court detective investigated. Miller and the Miller home area have a history of tragedy including a prior suicide on the same farm.
Carlisl e residents Mark Knouse and his wife visited the mother of his wife near Heidlersburg. John C Brame and family hosted several guests including Walter Weigle and daughter Jane from Philadelphia. Other visitors included Grant Deatrick and family from New Oxford and Harrisburg visitor Mrs. Wm Yohe. Louise Robert of Lancaster spent time with her parents in Twin Bridges.
A wedding dinner was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Salich in Abbottstown on Sunday in honor of Wagpynedn luen and ydaughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. Vernon Qrun, who were recently married.
The Lilly family marked two centuries since Samuel Lilly and family settled Eden at Conewago with a church mass at Conewago Chapel and a wreath on the Lilly tomb. About 200 descendants gathered for a basket picnic and program, with addresses by descendants and a poem read by Austin J. Lilly. Attendees represented multiple states and counties, with an active organizing committee led by William McSherry.
A week of burglaries hit East Berlin including the East Berlin Canning company cannery, Mummert's garage for tires and accessories, and the East Berlin Railroad office with Red Man tobacco worth $50. A hardware store cash and private homes showed losses. six suspects from Hanover and Wrightsville were arrested in Lancaster on a series of robberies across Adams York and Lancaster counties.
Gettysburg and Hanover residents confront a water shortage as wells at the reservoir are used to supply the town. A temporary purification system is in place, factories are idle, and health fears rise of a possible typhoid outbreak amid the drought.
The New Chester area reports Sharrers mill will shut down Saturday due to the Pines picnic. With creek flow low, the mill currently uses a tractor to run machinery. Arthur R. Jones aged 42 a Gettysburg mill manager and war veteran died Friday at Warner hospital after an appendectomy for a ruptured appendix led to septic poisoning. He was admitted July 23 and complications arose during the procedure. He had been active in Gettysburg community life for ten years.
Octavius Conti of near Gettysburg was held for the August grand jury on a mayhem charge at a hearing before Justice John C Shearer. Bail was set at 300 dollars. The matter arises from a dispute between Conti, a state highway department inspector, and M J Morton of Harrisburg, foreman for the Taneytown road contractor.
The annual Altland reunion is set for August 9 in Farmer's Grove near East Berlin. The Holtzschwam orchestra provides music for the picnic evening with the York New Salem band also offering tunes.
Fifty-seven descendants of George and Hannah Smith gathered at Williams Grove on Sunday for a family reunion. Officers were elected: P. C. Smith president, J. W. Shutt vice president, Chloe B. Wegener secretary, Smith treasurer, and Dora Smith historian. Families from Gettysburg attended.
Miss Juania M Dowhouer of Camp Hill visiting uncles Guyon and Robert Smith in Columbus Ohio for two weeks. Miss Pauline Klingel of West High Street Was a recent visitor from New York.
Hampton and nearby families gathered at Arendtsville Park and Williams Grove for reunions and picnics. Visitors included the Wilsons, Kimmels, Deatricks, Treibers, Lightners and Crists among others. The Lutheran Sunday School picnic date moved to August 14, with rain date August 15. The community also notes address changes and a 92nd birthday celebration for Henry Heinard, plus a tribute to longtime subscriber.
Residents of Green Springs and Bethlehem Mines employees halted a forest fire near the Witmer tract after an alarm at 3 30 p m. George Bentzel raised the alarm, prompting Bethlehem mines crew and G W Miller sawmill staff to respond. Fire covered about four and a half acres before containment. Joseph Zinn alerted and arrived to assist as residents monitored for new outbreaks.
The Weikert family held its third annual reunion at Arendtsville park with about 350 attendees. Officers elected for the coming year include Edward L. Weikert Jr. as president and Charles Weikert as vice president.
Eleven members of the Adams county cow testing association reported 22 cows producing more than 40 pounds of butterfat in July. The top producers were G. F. Gebhart and Guy Tanger, with two herds averaging over one pound per day. The listed members include John OC Bream Roy Bream Hiram Miller George Motter Mrs Rose Murren John Bair G F Gebhart R M Spangler Guy Tanger T N Cashman and Earl Cashman.
A third large fire in a week hit near Gettysburg and destroyed a barn and wagon shed on Isaac Martz’s farm along the Baltimore pike three miles south of town. The blaze, thought to start from spontaneous combustion, caused about 10000 dollars in losses and was only partly covered by insurance.
Robert Englebert John Himes and Frank Deatrick served as pallbearers. The services at Mauertown were conducted at 11 30 oclock by the Rev Edward Miller pastor of the Brethren church.
Mrs. Sarah Ann Funt Schuyler, 75, died Friday at her Orrtanna home after a complication of diseases. Survived by five daughters including Mrs. Walter Sloat and Mrs. William Dougherty, two sons William and John Schuyler, twenty seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, one brother John Funt of Gettysburg R D, and sister Mrs. Carrie Klepper of Chevy Chase Maryland. Funeral services were held Sunday.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at St. John's church Cashtown for Mrs Susan C Eshelman of Chambersburg who died Friday.
Edgar Clement Smelser died at his home in Arendtsville Tuesday morning after a several-year illness. He was 58, born in Arendtsville to the late Harry A. and Elmira Smelser. Survived by his widow Mary Elizabeth Thomas, a son Henry Monroe Smelser at home, and siblings Ralph E. Smelser of Milwaukee, Malissa Smelser, Mrs. Luther Rice, and Mrs. A. R. Heckenluber, all of Arendtsville. Funeral is this Thursday afternoon.
George D. Taylor 95 a native of Menallen township died at his Millerstown home. He moved to Perry County as a young man and pursued farming and lumbering. He is survived by one son and one daughter.
Dr Norman H Tagg 35 of Littlestown was found dead in bed on Friday after five months of illness from an enlarged heart. He served in World War I overseas. He leaves a wife two sons his parents M H and Mrs Tagg and two brothers. Body to be buried in Elmira New York at the former home of his wife.
Pius C. Wildasin a prominent cattle dealer died at his home near Marburg on Monday from complications. He was 56 years old. He is survived by his widow and five children. Brothers John and Milton Wildasin of Hanover are noted as his siblings.
Ezra Frock aged 72 of Hanover died last week at Melrose Maryland. He was father to Grover B. Oscar E. and Kenneth KE Frock and is survived by his four sons. Funeral arrangements were not listed in the brief notice.
Mrs Amanda Hudgins aged 87 died at Cumberland township Tuesday from infirmities of old age. She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob Fleigle and was born in York county.
Kenneth Wolf sustains a knee injury after a fall causing his leg to stiffen while a gas explosion at a locomotive firebox burns Ed ward Wolf on arms and face. Bethlehem Mines loses a twilight game 11 to 3 in Gettysburg. Mrs. Harry Zinn hosts a surprise 21st birthday party. Joseph Zinn nets a job with Coulr son Heel and Innersole. Hanover Pete the large Maltese cat kills two large snakes and battles a three foot snake, watched by the Frock family. cat occasionally bites but avoids snake bites.
The Myers family met Saturday for the seventh annual reunion at Williams Grove Park. Officers elected for the coming year include President Rev. J. M. Myers Gettysburg Vice President D C Retnicker secretary Lenora Yeagy Dillsburg treasurer H M Myers Thomasville historians C Tilden Myers New Oxford and George B Myers Thomasville The program featured opening song America remarks by Rev J M Myers readings Loretta Wolfe Maude Kennedy Creta Spangler and historian’s address by Robert L Myers.
Charles R. Altland, proprietor of the Altland hotel in Abbottstown, left his car parked while asking workmen for directions. The car rolled down a steep grade, crashed through a cement wall into the Leaks home, injuring two boys asleep inside. Altland apologized and agreed to repair the damage.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Rose Garden tea room and a barn on the Emmitsburg road two miles south of Gettysburg at 10 am Thursday. The outbuilding first caught fire, then the barn, followed by the tea room. All structures were frame. wind favored the house. Firefighters sprayed from the dwelling side to prevent spread. Roofing shingles melted from heat. a few odds and ends and several chickens were lost. Insurance partly covers the loss.
Abbottstown notes report Prof C Grove Haines and wife arriving from Naples, Italy. Funeral attendees include Prof W W Eisenhart, J F Eisenhart, and Miss Mellie Eisenhart at Terre Hill. Fred Altland's 21st birthday marked by a party at Altland House with music and dancing. Hoffman Orphanage jars left at Reformed Church to collect fruits and vegetables. Postmaster James B Carnes celebrates his 74th birthday.
Mr and Mrs Roy Reedy and children visited Virginia for several days. Grover Thompson and Philadelphia relatives lunched with Hall Thompson’s family. Belle Shetton from Harrisburg stayed with J. Watsons. John Black, Herbert Zepp and others toured Niagara Falls Watkins Glen and Canada with Zepp visiting Buffalo. Arthur Vaughn hosted a surprise 21st wedding anniversary party at Gettysburg R D 10.
Nineteen years after a boyhood match in York Springs Jim Myers of Wilkes-Barre beat Arendtsville in a district game. Last week Myers pitched the latter half against Kane’s Arendtsville squad with Kane on the mound. Both had previously appeared on the New Oxford diamond in separate games.
A shed used for display cattle at the Farmers' Grove picnic between Abbottstown and East Berlin burned on Monday along with a nearby stack. Firemen from Abbottstown responded quickly, preventing spread to trees as crews cleared grounds in prep for the two week old event.
