The August climate in New Mexico was nearly normal in temperature with rainfall below average in most districts. About 15 000 recruits are needed all to be listed as privates. Half of commissioned officers to be sawmill foresters and trained, with others from forestry and military backgrounds. The Gallup strike is under government scrutiny amid evidence found on several workers. LW. W. membership cards and incriminating documents were recovered and examined by agents who recently visited. Officials now link the strike to German causes, according to the Gazette.
The state corporation commission has appealed to the state supreme court after denying railroads permission to raise intrastate coal rates by 15 cents per ton to match a 15 cent per ton interstate increase. The railroads are collecting the higher charge, and the commission seeks an injunction.

Johnson, editor of the a nta Fe New Mexican, was sentenced Monday to thirty days in Talencia county jail by Judge M C Crehem for contempt of court over a Maryh 31 article. An appeal was noted and a supersedeas bond of 500 dollars was set. Judge Edward R Wright, counsel for Johnson, paid a 50 dollar contempt fine after an allegedly objectionable court answer. Johnson denied intent to disrespect the court and said the piece defended Col B M Cutting and Mrs Ward.
