Tax values soar across counties in state assessment
The State Tax Commission adjourned after a two week session reporting property raises totaling over ten million dollars added to assessors returns. State valuation reached 4,202,208 with mine valuations to be added and last year stood near 311,000,000. Grants county leads in wealth with Grant and Colfax among top county totals and many counties show sizable increases especially grazing lands. Nine Colfax men called for war service and Grant county contributes 12 men to the national army.

E P Ripley president of the Topeka and Santa Fe Railway System says weekly car redistribution by the Railroads War Board has reduced the national car shortage. Santa Fe plans 3900 new freight cars 69 locomotives and new passenger cars at about 12 million dollars to meet government transport needs and support war effort. Cooperation with shippers shortens loading times and Santa Fe remains capable of transporting troops and war freight as required.
