The Grand Lodges of the Masonic bodies in New Mexico met in Las Cruces last week, with delegates noting royal entertainment by Masons and citizens. Banquets and social events made the stay enjoyable and productive as officers for the coming year were elected, led by Grand Lodge Richard M. Thorne.
The Chicago White Sox and New York Giants played a ragged yet thrilling game in the World Series. Rob Russell started for the Sox against Sallee, walking a batter on four pitches, while Burns and Jerzog highlighted an early Giants lead with key hits. The Sox rallied, scoring in the third and sixth, before Faber shut down the Giants over two innings. Final score: Sox four, Giants two, with Eddie Collins star for the Sox and Faber the winning pitcher.
John R McFie Jr a former Santa Fe resident now based in Gallup with his father has enlisted as a private in the New Mexico unit formerly the First New Mexico Infantry. He attended the Officers Reserve training camp in San Francisco but did not receive a commission and is serving his second term as secretary of the New Mexico Bar Association.
Chicago news reports on October 13 citing Federal Judge Landis who refused to approve bond for the release of William D. Reer, secretary of the Industrial Workers of the World, who is under indictment among numerous others.
Washington officials announce new wartime postage rates effective November 2 under the war tax bill. Domestic letters including mail to several regions require three cents per ounce, while drop letters from the posting office must bear two cents per ounce. Postal cards require two cents, and private mailing cards with messages must prepay two cents.
The American Red Cross through its town and country nursing service chose the Richmond School of Social Economy in Virginia as a training site for fall scholarships in public health and nursing. J C Shafer, a noted dry farmer and stock raiser from Rock Valley, was shot and killed by C S Crosby, a leading cattleman, yesterday near the Rock Valley schoolhouse. Crosby surrendered to authorities after the killing as Sheriff Ree, Judge Parsons, and Dr. Bradley investigated the scene amid a crowd of onlookers.
The United States district court grand jury completed 223 investigated cases, 255 witnesses examined, and returned 137 true bills and 76 no bills before being discharged. They praised the court and U S attorney Summers Burkhart, noted efficient officials and bailiffs, and urged continued efforts to suppress liquor traffic among soldiers and Indians. Judge Holloman scheduled a hearing for 2:30.
In Estancia Valley Torrance County residents hold a mass meeting on October 11 1917 to back Judge Holloman in resisting scrapping the New Mexico Central railway. The endorse the court stance to prevent the road from being torn up and to support permanent valley settlement.
Laurence Lockney, foreman of this office for five years, enlisted in an engineering corps of the government service in El Paso on Monday. He returned to Alamogordo Wednesday evening on a short leave of absence.
A patriotic week culminated in Albuquerque with a large parade led by Governor Lindsey and staff. Women from New Mexico, plus representatives from many organizations, showcased war work in the Occidental Building with red white and blue booths.
