Sunflower Silage Tested as Substitute for Corn Silage
At the College, sunflower silage was fed to cows as a substitute for cane or corn silage. Cows accepted it with time and produced nearly the same milk as corn silage, though slightly less than with corn. Average daily milk output over 44 days was 2207 pounds with cane silage and 2176 pounds with sunflower. Flavor of tails unchanged. Researchers conclude sunflower silage is desirable as corn silage and may be a satisfactory substitute when corn fails to mature or as an emergency crop.
