Santa Clara Drum and Bugle Corps Practices in Thoreau

Santa Clara drum and bugle corps members practiced in Thoreau on a hot Tuesday as about 150 students rehearsed under the sun in swimsuit attire. The group, part of the Santa Clara Van Guard from Santa Clara, California, traveled to Fort Worth, Texas for the season opening of the Drum Corps International competitions.

Supermarket of Veterans Benefits draws crowd in Gallup

The fourth annual Supermarket of Veterans Benefits drew a good size crowd at UNM Gallup. Allan Landavazo gave the welcome as Tim Hale of the New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services spoke in Tom Wagner's absence. VA Albuquerque rep Chris Gonzales urged outreach to small towns and noted May claims of 629 for veterans. Cassandra Morgan urged women vets' participation. Cal Curley touted Udall support. Shiprock man pleads guilty to sex abuse

Michael Crosby, 54, pleaded guilty in federal court to aggravated sexual abuse of a child under 16. Under a plea deal, Crosby faces 2 to 14 years in prison, followed by at least five years of supervised release, and must register as a sex offender. He remains in custody pending sentencing.

Spring break holds up McKinley teacher contracts in Gallup

In Gallup, McKinley County School District faces calendar delays delaying contracts for returning and new teachers. Assistant Superintendent Theresa Mariano said contracts cannot be sent until a school calendar for the new year is set, affecting letters of intent and collective bargaining with the McKinley Federation of United Schools Employees.

Jones Ranch man jailed after January shooting sentence

A Navajo Nation member from Jones Ranch received 24 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release for assault with a dangerous weapon. Galbert Henderson pleaded guilty to shooting two men on January 31, 2010 on the Navajo Reservation. He has been in federal custody since March 22, 2010.
