Grants property tax hike for Mount Taylor drainage project
Grants city budget totals 29 million for 2011 12 with 6.7 million for general operating. City Manager Bob Horacek says completing the Mount Taylor Addition passive drainage by May 2012 is a key challenge. Nine homes were demolished at a cost of 1.79 million due to water damage from effluent from Coyote del Malpais Golf Course. A small property tax increase to 6.18 percent per 100 000 assessed value may be needed for 2012 to cover project costs 500 000 to 700 000, costing about 64 dollars more per 100 000. The city lacks current revenue and seeks a grant from the environment department, hoping for a response soon.

Navajo Scouts Aid Fire Efforts Across Regions
Navajo Nation fire crews from the Division of Health and Navajo Camp Crews assisted in New Mexico and Arizona wildfires. As of this morning, 10 crew members were at the Track Fire and 20 at the Loop Fire, with President Ben Shelly praising the frontline workers and urging prayers for all firefighters and personnel on the ground and in the air.

Mistrial Declared in Animal Cruelty Case
A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the case of Arlene Kripipene 75 accused of 15 counts of animal cruelty after her St Francis Animal Sanctuary Candy Kitchen was shut down and over 90 dogs seized by the Cibola County Sheriff's Office in June 2009 After three days of jury selection and testimony Judge John W Pope ruled the mistrial due to a report with new information not provided to the district attorney’s office.

Young director earns Service Impact Award despite funding cuts
Juliana Ko executive director of the Thoreau Community Center faced losing two thirds of funding and three board members yet was honored with the Service Impact Award from the Corporation for National and Community Service at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service in New Orleans.
