Coal mine strike talks break off at Pittsburg Midway

Diné Bureau reports United Mine Workers Local 1332 began picketing north and south entrances of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mine after talks broke down. Negotiations halted May 12 after April 10 start, with 11 unresolved points. Union seeks six year deal with pension boosts and 401K, while P&M pushes 40 hour week and limited overtime. A second stake at Kemmerer mine occurred May 27 as contract expired.

Gallup Lions Rodeo to Raise Funds at Red Rock Park

The 52nd Gallup Lions Club Rodeo runs June 14 to 17 at Red Rock State Park. Organizers say past rodes have raised $18,000 to $40,000 for charity, with event prize money totaling $1,000 per event. The rodeo draws entrants from Arizona Utah Colorado and west Texas and features a$5 barbecue and raffles with prizes including a 2000 Ford F-150. Money supports health, welfare services for the blind handicapped seniors and youth.

Grants man charged after stabbing two in Grants

Virgil Watchman, 30, of 1044 N Sage is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in the early Thursday stabbing of two men at North Sage apartments. Witnesses led police to Watchman after a neighbor reported an altercation at 1:20 a.m. Elliot Garcia, 29, and Michael Aragon, 32, were wounded. Aragon’s location was unknown at press time.

Senate approves Navajo Code Talker Gold and Silver Medals

The Senate unanimously approved a defense bill provision to award congressional Gold Medals to the 29 original Navajo Code Talkers and congressional Silver Medals to 500 others who followed them. Senator Jeff Bingaman sponsored the act, noting the long overdue recognition for their wartime code that aided U S operations in the Pacific and saved countless lives.

Arbuckles coffee crates left mark on Navajoland

In Gallup, Richard son’s Cash Pawn displays a boxed Arbuckles Coffee Co item bought for 500 in 1997. The crates, once essential on the Navajo Reservation, served as furniture and storage. Elders recall Arbuckles as the coffee that helped improve life there, with crates becoming relics prized by collectors and locals alike.
