Grants City Council restricted sales and use of fireworks in open areas due to extreme drought. WINDOW ROCK The Mariano Lake Community School Board fights to keep control as the Navajo Nation Council Intergovernmental Relations Committee delays a joint BIA and Navajo Division takeover for three years. The panel voted to table the issue until June 19, amid debates over local autonomy and the fate of BIA funded schools on the reservation.

Fires linked to 44 blazes burn 421 acres in Navajo region

Diné Bureau reports 44 fires totaling about 421 acres across the Fort Defiance area with 90 burn assignments since April. Navajo Scouts crews supported 22 fires, 14 were for firefighter training, and crews aided prescribed burns. Since May, nearly 190 firefighters have worked on major fires including Cerro Grande and Clover, with crews in Prescott and Southern Ute Agency reserves still active.

Rejected Tohatchi educator lands Gallup post

Alberta Nozie, previously rejected for reemployment as Tohatchi High School assistant principal, was hired as Gallup Central High School assistant principal after a Gallup-McKinley County School Board meeting. Board members, excluding one absent, said she would need guidance. district officials cited her prior performance and the need for role modeling.

Navajo exile hearing delayed over Hopi land clash

Kee Shay a long time Navajo relocation resister on Hopi partitioned lands faces possible exclusion from the Hopi reservation. The May 22 hearing debated Hopi jurisdiction and accommodation rules under the 1996 agreement. Hopi and Navajo counsels clashed over authority and eligibility as the court delays the ruling to June 19.
