Interior secretary pick sparks native protests

Native American groups and The Morning Star Institute voice deep concern that former Senator Slade Gorton could be named interior secretary under President elect George W. Bush. They warn his tenure could curtail tribal sovereignty and federal treaties with 558 federally recognized tribes. Some see him as a viable Bush choice, while others view his selection as a political hedge before the election. A Washington Post article later linked Gorton with potential nomination alongside Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
