Great Radical powwow and love feast stirs Democracy debacle
A large Radical gathering on the fifth inst. drew about 3,000 in procession and a 2000-seat crowd at the Fair grounds with 361 torches in the torchlight march. Gov. Baker spoke weakly. Gen Kimarn and Gov Ogelsby had modest reception. Mt. Vernon Union editor overhyped the event. Freedmen's Bureau remains active post 1867 act. Radical policy clashes with public debt plan. Governor Brambertz delivered a three hour, forceful address praising Grant and urging Democrats to stand by the Union and vote to uphold reconstruction.
