Butler in Congress and a City Poem Spark Debate

A fragment from a 19th century paper notes Butler’s politics with a Sun Set poem and praises a local ad column poem All O. K. The piece mentions the Ohio River railroad truss bridge at Louisville as the nation’s longest, invites guests to an Episcopal mite at F Botton’s residence, and reports on Senate nominations to Spain. It also covers local river traffic aboard the Clara Scott and West Wind, a Republican view of Butler, a colored man elected as South Carolina judge, wild weather with a heavy snowstorm, a Sumner remark about Mrs. Revels, and discussions of the Fifteenth Amendment costs and negro suffrage. The piece ends noting calico dress ball prizes at Union Hall and a children’s ball.

It also reports a 196 foot high wrought iron chimney in Pittsburg, its construction method, and a New York Times quote on government expenditures described as prodigious.
