Veterans to end terms in Mahoning Township government
Long serving supervisors Lawrence Rich and Eugene Butch announce retirement, ending 50 years of combined service. Rich 30 years and Butch 20 with no re election this year. A new six year term supervisor and a two year term will be filled in Mahoning with candidates from Democrats and Republicans. In nearby Taylor Township, write in ballots produced a six year supervisor winner and a Democratic nominee. the six year auditor race favored Joseph Allegro by a one vote edge over William Ferrucci. The Democratic winner in the Taylor supervisor race will run unopposed in November.

Transit agency to get 42000 from tax lease deal
The New Castle Area Transit Authority will receive about 42000 under a three year safe harbor lease arrangement with PennDOT and E F Hutton. PennDOT will also handle 12 other authorities totaling 783777. The program transfers depreciation benefits on buses to the broker, with NCTA funds for operating costs and buses leased back for one dollar. The deal starts June 15 with payments due early July.

Butler man shot after standoff with state police
Butler area man Richard Ramsey, 29, of Donegal Township, was shot in the mouth by a state police bullet after a 40 minute standoff in which he fired several shots. Ramsey, armed with two shotguns and two rifles, was taken to Butler County Community Hospital and then Life Flighted to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. Police say he apparently had personal problems.

U.S. 11th Circuit refuses to delay Florida functional literacy test ruling affects 1,600 seniors, most black, who will not receive diplomas in June. Some may retake in July. Judge Kravitch dissented urging a stay. District Judge Carr previously refused to halt the test.
