Washington UPI report notes farm groups and Farm Belt politicians hail Moscow’s acceptance of talks on a long term grain sales pact with the United States. Deputy Agriculture Secretary Lyng said it’s too early to gauge impact on market share. Reagan said talks are exploratory to restore trust and cash payment terms. Talks could begin next month in London.
The 24 hour period ending at midnight May 17 reports a maximum 63 degrees and a minimum 34 with no precipitation. Shenango River stage rose to 8.31 feet, up from 5.16 feet last year.
Voters in the New Castle area faced a crowded field of 88 candidates as polls closed in a primary election. With 30 of 42 precincts counted late, results show Republican and Democratic totals for two and four year terms across New Castle Ellwood City and Laurel districts, including top vote getters such as VanHorn, Lastoria, and Alexander. Unofficial results reflect multiple incumbents and newcomers across districts, with further counting expected as precincts remain unreported.
Police Chief Joseph Farris led the Democratic mayoral primary with 38 precincts counted and a 307 vote edge over Angelo Sands. Sands trailed by 769 over Elizabeth Verterano as three precincts remained unreported. If Sands gains, Farris would face Dale Yoho, who survived a write in campaign by Verterano.
Syria announced it will not meet U S Middle East envoy Philip Habib saying there is nothing more to discuss about the Israeli Lebanese troop withdrawal pact. The government criticized Habib as anti Arab and emphasized Damascus will not participate in the deal.
W. Wilson Goode secured the Democratic nomination in Philadelphia amid 5,000 cheering supporters. The 44 year old pledged to move forward to a strong future and urged unity across all racial groups, aiming to become the citys first Black mayor after defeating Frank Rizzo.
