Desperate Desert Cruelty Aims at Miss Dawson in Wyoming
Reported in Rock Springs Wyoming about May 7. Wealthy Wyoming sheep men are accused of kidnapping and deserting Miss Alice Dawson a successful real estate agent who promoted colonization to Texas and New Mexico. She was taken into distant sagebrush country and left to die of thirst and madness. Ranchers threaten settlers, burn fences maim cattle and coercively drive farmers from the land. Dawson led a colonization expedition from Riverton to colonize 150000 acres under the Carey act and was abducted by masked sheep rangers while her party returned in fear. Runners describe a demented figure in tatters driven to madness by sage brush poison in a vast desert. The charge portrays violent resistance to settlement by a powerful sheep industry.
