New Castle residents face a radical police plan to arrest celebrants to curb Fourth of July noise. The move follows warnings that failed to deter the celebrations and comes as Governor Smith campaigns for the presidency.
The Houston convention marks Al Smith as the nominee, the first Catholic to be named by a major party. Senator Robinson of Arkansas appears the likely running mate as the platform pleases eastern wet and western dry factions. The vote was swift with no minority report and Smith winning on the first ballot.
County commissioners let the project for a new steel bridge over Neshannock Creek at East Brook station to Purdy and Sanders of Clinton Pa for 12598 dollars. John Henry Meare and Captain Charles B Colyer aboard the Olympic set out from the hatttery at five am to circle the globe in 23 days. Meare, a noted world traveler, holds the current 28 day record. Colyer is a stunt flyer and skywriting pilot. The seaplane voyage began after a delay in sailing plans.
In Connellsville Pa on June 29 Eugene Crawford jailed for drunkenness used a long pole to press a fire alarm, triggering the fire department. He then obtained water as a result of the alarm.
A Mt Jackson reunion for Battery B, famed field artillery, featured two surviving members David Needler and Johar Craig, with veterans from across the area gathering despite losses. The day included a noon country dinner, an North Beaver Township High School program led by W Caskey, and addresses by Rev Randles, Rev Nell, and Captain Frank Hill.
Senator Norris of Nebraska attacked the Democratic national platform saying it is remarkable for what it avoids rather than what it states. He criticized both major parties and admitted that for practical purposes a third party is an impossibility.
