Guard denies knowing of inmates' escape plot

PLATTSBURGH N Y AP A prison guard charged in connection with the escape of two killers admitted providing tools paint frozen hamburger and access to a catwalk electrical box but claims he never knew they planned to bust out. Gene Palmer released on 25000 bail after arrest on promoting prison contraband tampering with evidence and official misconduct. He says he was an unwitting helper and that investigators have no reason to believe he knowingly aided the escape. The case ties to Joyce Mitchell, the prison tailor shop instructor, amid the June 6 break of Richard Matt and David Sweat at Clinton Correctional Facility. Palmer said he supplied Matt with paint and brushes Sweat with pliers and a screwdriver and access to the catwalk to alter wiring for cooking in cells. He also delivered frozen ground beef last week before the escape. District Attorney Andrew Wylie noted no proof Palmer knew about hacksaw blades in the meat.
