A New Castle health department crisis leaves supplies exhausted and fumigation impossible. City officials warn only immediate state board intervention or local settlement can prevent a public health collapse as quarantines and contagious disease threaten numerous homes.
At the Baltimore armory on June 26 Ollie James of Kentucky was unanimously chosen permanent chairman by the committee on permanent organization after most states endorsed him. Several nominees withdrew or declined including Culberson Kern Wade and Burke with Bell also turning down the offer. James faced opposition but was selected to expedite convention business.
The council passed a resolution to revoke the contract of H. J. Cohen city garbage collector but the measure had not yet been delivered to the mayor for approval or disapproval this morning. The mayor had not stated his planned course of action.
Supt E J Berquist of the Personal Workers mission will speak Sunday morning at the Wampum Methodist church. Monday evening John G Nothdurst will conduct services at the mission.
City Treasurer C. C. Duff was handed a check for 13447 39 to pay the current fiscal year tax assessment on Carnegie Steel holdings in the city including the steel mill and furnaces. The sum is among the largest paid this year with other big manufacturers like Portland Cement contributing similar amounts as they settle their assessments. Tax collections for the year began June 1 and many owners are using the first opportunity to pay in full.
The city fire committee met to decide on new auto fire trucks. A committee of Colnet Shippler and Rigby will prepare specifications for the trucks to present at the next fire committee meeting.
Work has begun on a new addition to the American Car and Ship Hardware company plant on Mechanic Street. The expansion will house a department for manufacturing aluminum automobile parts recently added to the facility.

Washington June 26 Gen Wood ordered a squadron of the Third cavalry from San Antonio to El Paso Texas as Mexican rebels retreat toward Juraez. The force at El Paso will include the Second cavalry regiment one squadron of the Third one infantry regiment one infantry battalion and a field artillery battery.
Horace Taylor pledges to defeat Hank Griffin in a rematch next Monday night. He admits he was not at his best in the previous bout but now feels ready to finish Griffin and claims no one in New Castle will want to see him fight again.
A seven ton auto truck built by Driggs Seabury of Sharon passed through New Castle this morning and was driven on to Pittsburg under its own power. It drew attention as it moved about Pittsburg.
Bert Wells former editor of The News spent a few hours in New Castle shaking hands as he travelled home from Yonkers New York where he and C S Ward led a campaign to raise125000 dollars for a new Y M C A building. The drive collected about133000 dollars. Wells who has been linked with the Y M C A at Dayton Ohio since leaving New Castle will become secretary of the Y M C A in East Liverpool Ohio July 1. East Liverpool has a new building and with Wells in charge there is no danger of the work lagging.
Beaver Mercer and Lawrence counties medical societies plan a district meeting at the park at 6 p m Thursday followed by a banquet in the dining hall. Dr A L Stevens of Athens secretary of the Pennsylvania State Medical Association will give an address and there will be several toasts.
Washington June 26 Nearly 50,000 naval yard workers will be laid off Monday unless Congress approves funding by July 1. Acting Secretary Winthrop issued a provisional order to close the yards.
Mrs Josephine Seger, 78, of English Avenue, dies. Also listed are Dr J Henderson Smith, 81, Gust Peter, 25, Moravia. Funeral details not provided.
Edward T. Blews of Coaltown traveled to Waterloo Iowa and found his long missing brother Samuel Blews believed to have vanished for 25 years. Samuel, a gas manufacturer, had lived in Oklahoma England Montana before settling in Waterloo. He is married with three sons and recognized Edward after a period of doubt.
In Oyster Bay on June 26 Col Roosevelt collects telegrams and letters nationwide endorsing the new Progressive Party plan. Supporters form a fund to cover organizing costs, including a donor who sent a 1500 dollar check. Roosevelt will ride horseback to seek fresh air after time in a Chicago hotel, planning to be outdoors for the next two weeks.
Joe Albertine employed at the Aetna furnace of the Republic company fell from a high scaffold Tuesday evening and was badly hurt. He was taken to Shenango Valley hospital for treatment. County workers found Hillsville bridge planks and rotted joists requiring replacement.
William J. Bryan rejected a bid to chair the resolutions committee at the Democratic national convention in Baltimore. He warned the committee might be packed and said he wished to preserve freedom of action. Bryan said he would fight for his principles on the convention floor and before voters.
At the Baltimore convention on June 26 the committee on credentials delayed action awaiting a full report. Speakers followed a slow pace as prominent Democrats addressed the assembly while delegates debated whether to hear speeches before official business resumes.
PLAN Bio RALLY AT CENTRAL CHRISTIAN Sunday is to be a day of special importance at the Central Christian church. A big rally is planned in the Sunday school, commencing at 9:45 o'clock. The aim is to have 500 present. At the regular hour for morning service the pastor D. P. Shafer will preach on "Father" observing Father days. In the evening he will preach on a patriotic subject and old soldiers and all others interested are especially invited to attend. Special music will be rendered.
Shenango Valley hospital trustees last night awarded contracts for a new brick steam laundry near Shenango street and Lincoln avenue. The 32 by 68 foot building will cost about 8000 dollars with 5000 from the state and 3000 raised by subscription. Excavation starts immediately by Joseph Zanene. brick work by James M. Hamilton. carpenter work by Ziegler and Strawhecker. slating and tin by G A Perry and company. A modern, fully equipped laundry will replace the old frame facility deemed inadequate for hospital needs.
City garbage collector H J Cohen said he was not worried about councils’ action to steam roller him out of his contract. He had no statement on future steps but would continue collecting garbage under his existing contract.
The Ladies' Aid society of the Croton Avenue M E church will meet Thursday at 7 30 PM a week earlier than usual and a full attendance is desired.
