An attempted repeal of the 1900 Sunday blue laws was introduced in New Castle's common council and sent to the finance and law committee for study. Sponsor Councilman Riddle expects a heated debate as supporters and opponents weigh reopening Sundays and closing restrictions on soda fountains and similar businesses.
In Baltimore on June 25, Democratic leaders quietly evaluated possible running mates for the ticket. Bryan would likely pick Wilson if nominated, though Wilson refuses second place. Other favored names include O Gorman, Marshall, Foss, Baldwin, Sulzer, Dix, Preston, Howell, Montigue, Burton, with regional and geographic factors shaping the choices.
City Treasurer C. C. Duff plans a mounted peacock donation to New Castle High School Museum. The bird, on display in Cooper & Butler's window on Washington Street, measures nine feet wide and five feet tall with a splendid plumage arrangement. It was raised on the Duff family farm at New Bedford and recently killed in a duel with a turkey gobbler.
Judge William E. Porter and Attorney W. K. Hugus traveled to the Democratic convention in Baltimore last night. Chairman Harry Good of the Lawrence County Democratic Committee plans to depart for Baltimore this evening. It is understood that all local men will support Bryan.
Police say three suspects were taken into custody after an incident last night two were intoxicated individuals and one described as a suspicious character. The mayor released all three on municipal terms this morning.
Frank G. Runkle has formed an information against John Jones Jr charging aggravated assault and battery on Runkle’s son William. Jones Sr and Jones Jr painted a Beckford Street house when the fight occurred. William Runkle was knocked unconscious and needed a physician. Bail was set for a hearing before Alderman Ranney. Rosaline Zounsbury of West Pittsburg charged John Abronesk with assault and battery after a Sunday altercation. Special Officer Truby filed information charging disorderly conduct against both men.
C A Moore of New Wilmington Road marketed 75 bushels of berries from 112 acres, with large juicy samples shown at The News office. At ten cents a quart, the yield would net about 240 dollars per acre and a half, illustrating potential in small fruit raising compared with grain yields.
Nick Janero reports his wife and five year old son have been missing from 1 South Jefferson street. He believes she eloped with another man. Charles Straw, aiding the search, says a $50 reward is offered for information leading to her apprehension.
Plans are completed for a Battery B benefit program at Westfield Presbyterian Church. On Friday evening after the Battery B reunion a musical program will feature solos duets quartets and orchestra numbers along with readings. Proceeds go to the Battery B company.
John Wise of near Prospect raises a colt on a bottle after the mother refused to nurse. He fitted a gum nipple to a bottle and began feeding the foal, which is growing well and appears to become a fine horse.
Attorney Wm W Stevenson will travel to Princeton Friday evening to deliver a patriotic speech and organize a Sons of Veterans camp. The community recalls Civil War soldiers from Princeton and nearby areas, and their sons seek organization.
West Middlesex June 25. R E Harshman a well known Westside resident fell from a cherry tree while picking fruit. A 15 foot ladder had been set by Clarence Elliott. Harshman lost consciousness briefly and was found by Elliott. He suffered bruises neck contusions and a badly bruised left arm but no broken bones. He is recovering and thankful the accident was not worse.
A special meeting of the school board will be held this evening to clear over a month of business. No items of real importance are expected to come before the board.
H. C. Richardson of Akron and Miss Mary E. Butler of Pittsburg were married by Alderman Cooper at his Long avenue office last night. They will reside in Akron.
An ice cream and cake social will be held at the Slippery Rock parsonage the home of Rev. Bell on Thursday evening June 27.
Gesner notes a pike caught in Swa bia in 1497 bearing a ring inscribed with a phrase about Frederick II and a date of October 5, 1230. The piece frames the fish as a vessel of history and legend.
Christina Newton aged 82 of She Nango Township died recently. The obituary notes her long residence in the township and surviving family members. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Edward S. Gardner and Agnes Anna Wise were married yesterday at the office of Alderman Green officiated by Alderman Ranney.

City playgrounds open Wednesday at 9 a.m. with grounds on Grant Street, South Mill Street, Lincoln and Garfield, Mahoning school, and Martin Gantz. The Mahoningtown field aims to open next Monday. Organizers Bailey, Weisbrod, Ritchie, Daum, and Westminster College staff begin supervision for older boys and younger children.
Erie officials say the station remains unchanged because Lake Erie may take over the property and repair plans are unsettled. Rumors persist that the company plans to sell to the P and L E, which could lead to tearing down the present structure and a larger building in its place. Until negotiations finish, the station will stay as is, a shock to passersby.

Ernest F. Acheson has sold his entire controlling stock in the Washington Observer to his son in law John L. Stewart. Stewart also owns the Beaver Times and has been with the Observer company since its organization ten years ago.
A Moravia horse owned by L. Harbing died in terrible agony yesterday after being bitten by a mad dog days earlier. The animal went on a destructive rampage inside the stable as rabies took hold.
The annual outing of three Christian and the Epworth churches is in the park today with a sports program and a morning ball game between the Christian and Epworth teams.
H J Cohen, city garbage collector, was removed from his post by a finance and law committee measure. The resolution to revoke his contract passed by acclimation, with Mayor signature needed to become effective. Cohen had warned of furnace capacity limits and said large garbage loads could not be burned under current operations.
