President Roosevelt transfers the tax the rich program to Congress as critics accuse him of political timing. Administration spokesmen stress the risk of backing redistributive measures with the President leading the issue, while many lawmakers fear a final roll call.
Democrats in both chambers revolt over jamming the tax on wealth measure through in five days. While supporting principles of taxing large fortunes and corporate incomes, they balk at hurried action as House members question who the leaders are and threaten delay past Saturday night.
Nineteen bodies recovered from the burned wreckage after two planes collided near Medelín's airport. Noted victims include Henry Swartz of Philadelphia and Lester W. Straus of New York, with Carlos Gardel and Ernesto Samper among the mourned. Grant Flynn of New York injured as four others are hurt. A Seaboard Air Line transport from Bogotá was inbound to refuel as a Saco Airliner was taking off.

Police Chief Michael Culligan and four officers were suspended with four more facing ouster after months of investigation into an alleged alliance between police and the underworld. Safety commissioner H E Warren cited evidence of police ownership of slot machines and illicit ties to criminal lawyers. About 400 phonographic records and over 3 000 pages of transcripts were produced. Several officers announced they would fight suspensions rather than resign.
Judges Hildebrand and Chambers imposed sentences this morning on guilty or convicted defendants. The crowded court heard leniency pleas and self defense statements as weights of cases were decided, including Abraham Lincus Williams who received one to three years for larceny from the person and Clarence Williams who got one to six months for stealing $8 from Ellwood City nurses’ home.
Defense for six Bruno kinsmen on trial over the Kelayres election eve mass casualty asks jurors to view the event as a mob conflict against the Brunos. New Castle will pay 120 000 more than budgeted for the coming school year as no salary reductions were enacted. Hazen reports that educators lobbyists influenced legislators and relief via subsidies after August 1936 hinges on a constitutional ruling.

Nine year old Littis George Weyerhaeuser will testify from the witness stand when Margaret Waley age 19 stands trial July 5 in Tacoma Washington. Assistant U S Attorney Owen P Hughes said the government holds Waley chiefly responsible in the kidnapping and will push for a harsh penalty. The case centers on the nation’s most sensational kidnapping of the year.
