At a Rotary club meeting in New Castle, concerns were raised that local entertainments claimed to benefit charities often largely profited professional entertainers. David Jameson introduced a resolution urging board sanction to ensure underwritten events truly support the intended charities and receipts aid the beneficiary organizations.
Italian armies breach Piave lines after the Austro Hungarian offensive, reportedly cutting off a large Austro Hungarian force east of the Piave. Six thousand prisoners counted, vast booty seized including numerous Skoda guns as Italian infantry and cavalry press the pursuit of retreating troops.
The second draft lottery will be held in Washington on Friday at 9 a.m. The 744,865 registrants aged twenty one enrolled on June 5 will have their order numbers drawn. A large bowl used for last year’s 10,000,000 drawing will again hold the black纸 capsules. About 1,200 key numbers are expected to be drawn, with numbers checked on a central blackboard and telegraph operators disseminating results nationwide. Secretary Baker, Provost Marshal General Crowder, and members of Congress will attend.
Gen Pershing reports successful American patrol advances in the Chateau Thierry region capturing five machine guns and other material. German counterattacks at Torcy were repulsed with heavy losses, while a Lorraine raid left several American soldiers missing.
A tornado hit Green City Missouri shortly after 6 PM killing six people and injuring about twenty. The White couple perished at their home, Vina Abernathy and family members died at the Abernathy residence, Arch Johnson also killed. Abernathy daughters suffered multiple injuries. The storm center was about 112 miles west of Green City.
The civil service board certified Thomas Walters Benjamin Augustine and John Carter as meeting the requirements for police officer. Mayor Newell recommended Walters to fill the post effective July 1. The appointment was approved Horton voted no and Whaley refused to vote.
Washington reports confidential information that Germany plans to admit failure of the 1918 campaign. German agencies promise next year will bring better prospects to overrun France and to defeat England and America. They also foresee renewed submarine warfare and aims to conquer Egypt and India after the war.
June 25 dispatch reports Germany began a peace offensive as Dr. Richard Von Kuehlmann fired the first salvo. Officials cite Wilson and Lansing warnings that the war must continue until Germany accepts a defeat of its military leadership.
A dispatch from Stockholm to the Daily News states an unconfirmed report that the former czar of Russia has been assassinated at Ekaterinburg, with confirmation still awaited.
Council grants permission for the Sunday school of the Hungarian Baptist church to hold its annual picnic on July 4 in Cunningham woods on Reynolds street.
German foreign secretary Dr Richard Von Kuehlmann told the Reichstag the Central powers seek borders wider than history and freedom of trade world wide. He said Belgium is not yet addressed and urged enemies to offer peace matching Germanys needs as the moment for settlement arrives. Amsterdam reports the continuation on page two.
Edward N. Hurley chairman of the U S shipping board told the Senate Agricultural Committee that passing the bone-dry prohibition amendment would be a dangerous experiment and could hinder America in fighting the submarine menace during wartime. He echoed Bainbridge Colby who warned prohibition could affect national efforts.
An Atlantic Port transport suffered a blaze in its hold causing thousands of dollars in damage. Army intelligence officers arrested coal passer Joseph Bernice found smoking near the scene but released him for lack of evidence.
Officials warn peace is not imminent as German control over Austria remains complete and a collapse there would topple Germany. Emper or Charles may be faced with ironhand suppression of unrest while German troops are considered possible in Austria. A new German offensive is expected in the west with Indendorf reinforcing positions and the channel ports as the probable objective.
Lawrence County American Red Cross chapter asked to aid sale of War Savings Stamps in the campaign now open. Charles Scott, division manager, urges chapters to publicize the W S S drive, post literature and posters, and forward requests for speakers to authorities.
Councilman Burns questions findings as City Engineer Milholland presents a tentative report. Readings at West Washington station show adequate electricity usage. he cites dirty fixtures as the likely cause of poor lighting conditions.
South New Castle borough asks for annexation after council reviews a borough ordinance backed by a petition signed by over three fifths of residents. Riley notes the borough’s bonded debt at 2000 dollars, property value 180000 dollars, and a combined borough and poor fund levy of 11 mills. Further school district debt data will be provided to a full committee. The city solicitor says annexation would delay taxing borough residents for city debt until needed.
Dr Edward Chiera lecturer on Assyriology at the University of Pennsylvania will lecture in this city on Italy with sixty illustrated slides and a three reel film “The Skies and Seas of Italy.” Allan W Urmson, Red Cross Hygiene chairman, helps bring the event and further details will be announced.
State fuel administrator orders nationwide skip stop operation for Mahoning and Shenango Railway lines serving New Castle Sharon and interurban routes. Target eight stops per mile in business areas, six in residential, four in suburban. Local officials survey data and plan talks with the administrator to apply the order locally.
TRENTON Mo June 25 Report here says a cyclone that struck Green City Missouri last night killed four to seven people. Wires are down in the town and automobiles have been sent to aid the victims.
A British steamer collided with a railroad float carrying 20 freight cars, sinking in the harbor as it approached port with 500 Canadian and American troops aboard. One man is missing and believed drowned, caused by an adverse tide.
Two recruits were secured at the army recruiting station yesterday and sent to the Columbus barracks. They are Thomas L. OConnor of Ellwood City and William G. Gilkey of 450 East County Line Street. They enlisted for service in the Field Artillery.

An official Rome dispatch to the Italian embassy reports that Austrians are in full retreat. It says they foresaw a possible Italian defeat but did not anticipate their own defeat.
