A Walker Street tenement collapse in New York killed seven members of one Tomasarchino family and injured others while they slept. Foreman Joseph Bloomenthal was jailed on homicide charges after police warned the building department of unsafe conditions. An inspector deemed the structure safe earlier, and cracks had reappeared despite repairs with large props.
In Alliance Ohio a major split within the Gift of Tongues sect emerged over who should be permanent leader. The jury returned a not guilty verdict for Mrs E H Marquette on fortune telling charges. Costs were split, later struck from prosecutor Rev J S Martin by Judge Porter. Testimony focused on spiritualism as a religious belief with witnesses from Columbus and local residents.
The Harrisburg capitol investigation commission altered its schedule as James M. Shumaker, former superintendent of public grounds and buildings, was reported ill with a severe cold and pneumonia feared. Senator Fisher opened proceedings while counsel Charles H. Bergner said Shumaker is not dodging the probe. A recess was called as the panel planned to first examine former Auditor General Snyder and then former State Treasurer Mathues.
A ball game is arranged for Wednesday afternoon between the New Castle Retail Grocers' association team and Butler grocers. Captain Will Neff has received overtures from Erie for a contest soon. John M. Watson spent Tuesday in Pittsburg.
County commissioners discuss smallpox case papers signed by Herbert Roberts from Neshannock township. Papers entered June 3 and counted after multiple handling. Smallpox incubation is two to three weeks. officials almanac oddments noted. Election returns must hereafter be fumigated.
After being mourned as a possible kidnapping or drowning victim, six year old Louie Yambrick, a German boy, was found wandering in West Pittsburg and then taken in by his mother who arrived from Haselton Ohio. The case involved uncertainty about his fate in the Mahoning.
The picnic committee of Shenango lodge I O F visited Enon Valley last night and attended a banquet as guests of the Enon lodge.
The storm sewer ordinance to drain South Mill Street lake near the WN&PRR track passed in common councils last night and the construction contract will be let at the next meeting. The measure was rushed through both branches in record time. Morris Cukerbraum is named as father of the bill.
The third smallpox case in 24 hours was reported to Director of Health Homer at 2 PM Tuesday. The outbreak is in a Fifth ward family on Fulton Street, name not released.
The First Presbyterian church unanimously calls Rev C Waldo Cherry of Troy New York and fixes his salary at 4500 annually. The call followed a detailed pulpit committee report and support from denomination leaders with funds to come from pledges and a 20 percent pew rent increase. Rev Cherry, about 40, is married with four children and has led the Second Presbyterian church in Troy for four years.
Samuel Gompers president of the AFL in the Federationist editorial calls Harry Orchard the most consummate scoundrel and bestial brute the world has known citing Orchard’s own testimony against William Haywood. He lists murder, bigamy, burglary, arson, fraud, lying and theft as Orchard’s claimed crimes.

Health Committee to investigate a dollar deposit scheme by H H Updegraff the city garbage collector after residents including Jesse Keller complained the plan exceeded his authority and risked public health. The issue was referred to the health committee for a legal opinion and possible action.
Word arrives of the critical condition of Rev J Wilbur Chapman a noted Presbyterian evangelist scheduled for October meetings. His wife lies dying from blood poisoning after surgery and Chapman suffers heart trouble with faint hopes for recovery. If no improvement his engagements may be canceled.
Miss Emma May Renfro, mother of the famed John Wesley choir Pittsburg, will sing at St Luke's A M E Zion Church Elm Street Friday evening. She is described as one of the finest colored female singers in the country.
While playing Monday afternoon, Mary daughter of Mrs Lucy Jeffries of Lyndal street fell and cut her left thigh to the bone on a sharp piece of wood. The incident occurred with a party of friends nearby.
