911 fee debate evolves as 911 centers seek funds
The House approved a 911 extension while the Senate waits. Key issues include the fee amount and revenue distribution to 911 centers. Diminishing telephony reduces income, with Lawrence County receiving 1.3 million last year and a 1.25 landline plus 1 per month cellphone surcharge. Wireless revenue dominates, landlines last updated in 1990, and VoIP fees rise. Proposals consider flat versus percentage charges and funding from other devices. Lawmakers aim for a 20 year stable plan amid evolving tech.
