Wolf and lawmakers fail to break budget impasse in Harrisburg
Gov. Tom Wolf met with senior lawmakers in Harrisburg in a session that yielded no budget breakthrough with two weeks left in the fiscal year. The talks centered on school funding, pension reform, liquor store privatization, and reducing local property taxes as Democrats push for a Marcellus Shale tax and sustainable revenues. Senate leaders signaled progress on liquor privatization but demand a Wolf proposal aligned with a House plan before broader talks, while House Democrats pressed for more money for public education.

Balcony collapse in Berkeley tied to rotted beams
Berkeley officials said a balcony collapse that killed six and injured seven near UC Berkeley may have been caused by rotted wooden beams and moisture damage. Investigators stressed the cause is not yet official as two other balconies were deemed unsafe at the Library Gardens complex. Six Irish students died and five others aged 21 to 22 from Ireland were identified among the victims, with mourners arriving from Ireland as flags half-staff and a national pause followed.
