More than $175,000 in bonus checks were issued today to ex servicemen in the New Castle district as 1,700 World War veterans received government baby bonds. Checks range from 50 to 1550 dollars with a 1,550 dollar top payment for converting 31 bonds.

Joseph Berger, 67, a retired railroader, shot and killed his wife Minnie in her Millvale home, then killed himself after a violent 12 year marriage marked by bitter disputes. Last night’s electric storm caused major damage as a large tree fell onto the Moore home at 321 Euclid Avenue and crushed the Moore automobile. The tree may have been struck by lightning before it toppled, with nearby Norris residence at 317 Euclid Avenue also affected. In Erie Pennsylvania the coroner ruled accidental death after two girls Dona Marie Shattuck age 8 and Rita Jean Conden age 10 died from asphyxiation in a bathroom when hot water heater flames were extinguished by splashed water. Found by the mother Mrs Leslie Shattuck the children were dead after a two hour effort by firefighters and doctors.
John D. M. Hamilton, Republican National Committee chairman, predicts Governor Landon will carry the East and Midwest in November. He names Oklahoma Nebraska Missouri and western states plus two Pacific coast states as targets and dodges a direct South claim while urging Farley to pick six Roosevelt states. Hamilton arrived from Topeka after a turbulent flight to speak at a Republican dinner and to watch the Schmeling fight. He says no date yet set for a formal ceremony.
New Castle readies to host the Pennsylvania Circle convention. The local P H C assembled at I O O F Hall to elect officers and finalize plans with Cathedral hosting sessions and Castleton official HQ. Roy Irwin reports committees prepared for a large delegate influx starting Monday morning.

Coast guardsmen searched Lake Erie off Silver Creek for the bodies of Walter Ruda William Zinara and Edward Fisher believed drowned when their motorboat capsized during a squall last night. Fisher's car was found where he parked before the trip.
The Hamberg American liner Tacoma grounded at Chiquiri Point near La Union San Salvador while en route from Hamberg Germany to San Salvador The vessel expected to refloat at high tide and passengers were in no danger per a San Francisco Chamber of Commerce marine department message.
