Officers arriving from a Cuban port report an American submarine sank a German submarine off the Atlantic coast last Friday. The American crew sighted the German through a periscope and fired a torpedo causing a large explosion and an oil-covered sea. Navy officials say confirmation is needed before an official statement.
American troops hold positions northwest of Chateau Thierry amid gas shelling by German forces. French astonishment at Yank calm endures as patrols cross the Marne and engage near Belleu wood Bouresches and Triangle farm.
Italian and Franco British forces launched a grand counteroffensive as Austro-Hungarian troops came under heavy infantry and artillery pressure from Monte Grappa to the Piave. Berlin warned of reinforcements amid stiff Italian resistance, with Montello and Zenson Loop battles highlighting the standstill along the Piave line.
St Marys parish will dedicate a service flag next Sunday afternoon June 28 at 3 pm. A parade with civic and military escort is planned with about two thousand congregants expected. Commutation tickets stay in use with reduced per-ride costs.
Nick Mate, jailed in Lawrence County for the killing of Frank Andrea in Ellwood City, pleads self defense. Mate says Andrea threatened to kill him and he believed a revolver was present, so he shot first. He speaks of a wrong involving Andrea and his wife and shows no remorse.
Wayne B Wheeler, general counsel of the Anti-Saloon League, told the senate agriculture committee that liquor interests are disloyal and funding pro German propaganda in the US while urging the Jones bone dry nationwide prohibition amendment.
Mayor Newell refused to grant licenses to a band of gypsies stationed near Cascade Park who sought to canvass houses and tell fortunes. Four tents are pitched outside the city, beyond police jurisdiction, and they are prohibited from operating in the city and will be picked up if the order is disobeyed.
The John Knox Sunday school class of the First M. E. church sent a box of 50 garments to Belgians. The group raised funds and made all the clothing, now en route overseas.
Mayor A D Newell of New Castle urges Lawrence County residents to donate to a national relief campaign. He notes a $20 million goal with a local share of $10,000 and calls for contributions during the week of June 18 to June 25.
Joe Colang of Mahoningtown left for Hoboken this morning to enter the U S Navy as a musician. The cracker-jack cornetist chose service after his parents granted consent due to his youth.
