Three platoons of fighting Americans held their ground under a bombardment in the Toul sector and repulsed a vastly superior German force at Xivray this morning. Allied artillery aided the defense as storm troops failed to take prisoners, returning badly cut up and empty handed. Continued on Page Two.
Registration of alien German women is under way at the mayor's office. J. C. George reports four women registered this morning with more expected. Seventeen German alien men were registered in March. The morning registrants were young married women, one born in Germany.
Violent fighting rages along the northern Italian front as Austrian assaults are repelled by Italian, British, and French forces. The war office says counter‑attacks drive the Austrians back along the Piave and Asiago sectors after a bold plan aimed at Bassano and Treviso.
U S District Attorney Wertz probes a Canton Socialist state convention speech by Eugene V. Debs calling allies and Central powers linked in plunder. Debs praises Bolsheviki and jail terms for principles while J J Fried of Cleveland outlines raising an army of 1 000 000 Socialists to aid Russia.
Complaint to the mayor reports car salesmen parking on main streets and offering vehicles to the public. The law bars parking over two hours. several cars were seen on Washington street and a car with a For Sale sign blocked the St. Cloud building most of Saturday. Chief M J Young says parking rules are being violated and orders have been given to enforce them.
County supervisors face a severe labor shortage hindering road repairs. Judge Emery convened a conference with Thomas McCullough of the state roads to seek solutions as professors and workers fill road labor roles and supervisors extend hours from dawn to night.
Lawrence county farmers appealed for labor at the employment office this morning seeking men to hoe county corn fields. Captains must arrange immediate transportation and volunteers should contact the employment office at Bell 695 or Union 77.
Following a communication from Secretary Gates of the League of Third Class cities the council appointed City Clerk C Ed Brown and Councilman James A Horton to represent the city at the convention in Erie on August 27 2829.
Lawrence chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution raises a melting pot project to fund war relief efforts. The plan uses old German coins containing precious metals to be melted and converted into ammunition or supplies, with proceeds supporting patriotic causes and continuing on page two.
Four draftees are to be sent to Camp Greenleaf on Thursday by the county board to take the places of men who have been rejected. The men leaving include Andre Coranato of New York City, Dominico Lesta of Wickliffe Ohio, Ricci Pasvanole of McDowell County West Virginia, and Leon Weilmz of Brooklyn New York.
James Jackson William M Brown and Joseph O'Brien were sentenced to the western penitentiary for attempting to break jail and were taken there on Saturday by Sheriff Joseph H Boyd.
A. Wool is, a grower in Altoona, was fined $100 and ordered closed for 30 days for selling flour without substitutes after three warnings by the county food administrator. The fine was donated to the Red Cross.
Davies of Wallace Avenue a noted tin mill roller and youth worker is accepted for overseas YMCA service in France. He will depart July 7 to assist a secretary in a front line hut, aiming to lead youth work for a year or the war’s duration, prepared by French studies and prior experience.
A Tuesday launch in New Castle begins a week long drive for Jewish War Sufferers. Lawrence County sets a $10000 quota and the county drive targets $20000000 nationwide. Marcus Feuchtwanger chairs the new Lawrence County committee with Bert F Kline as vice chair and Jacob Cosel as treasurer.
Nick Mato of Massillon Ohio is jailed on murder charges after opening fire at Frank Andrea on Fifth and Lawrence Avenues. A public chase ended when A P Jordan Charles Jackson and others seized the revolver and aided by Sheriff Boyd and state police. Andrea, 30, worked at Shelby Tube and lived at 518 Glen Avenue. Mato’s motive linked to a previous dispute over money.
Two recruits were secured at the army recruiting station on Saturday and were sent to the Columbus barracks. They are Philip D. Williams and C. Fred Hartworth both entering the medical corps. Mr and Mrs Benjamin Lowery of West North Street spent Sunday with friends in Canton Ohio.
Judge Emery refused the liquor license applications of John E. Fee and John P. Henry. The filings were heard at license court earlier in the spring but were held for further consideration. No reasons were stated, but it is presumed the privilege to sell liquor was revoked for noncompliance with regulations.

Announcement reports the marriage of Mrs. J. Fallis of North Jeffersons to Admiral George Milton Book in San Antonio Texas on a Saturday evening. Rev. Robert Little officiated and the couple now reside on North Jeff Street. Admiral Book is retired from the navy with many connections in the city.
An ordinance for a tary sewer on Beckford street was introduced in council and referred to the committee of the whole for consideration.
