Mohawk Area searches for new superintendent amid budget and coaching changes
Mohawk Area School District parents and students urge the school board to name Lorree Houk as superintendent candidate, while the board takes no action and meets in executive session to discuss candidates. The district plans a $140,000 sewer tie-in project funded from the fund balance, with an Aug. 24 start date. Also under discussion are Peewee and Midget cheerleader tryouts amid parental concerns about cuts and impartial judges.

Second shark attack shatters Oak Island response
Paramedics Joyce Baker and EMT Skalowych were back at the station minutes after treating a 12 year old girl when a second shark attack occurred two miles away. Kiersten Yow lost her left arm below the elbow and a leg injury but was stable at UNC Children’s Hospital. Hunter Treschel, 16, had his left arm severed above the elbow and was in good condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The team rushed to the victims, applied makeshift tourniquets and IVs, then airlifted Yow as the second patient was treated on shore. They restocked supplies after the incidents.
