Two naval aviators attached to the U S S Memphis were killed when their scouting plane crashed into the water at the entrance to Guantanamo Bay Cuba. Knox accepted once drafted after rival candidates for second place eliminated themselves during morning maneuvers. Ed Hayes said Knox was being offered without his consent. Vandenberg and Edge were Knox rivals who declined to press their candidacies.
