City Hall Sidelights Occupational Tax Deadline

The City Hall Sidelights note the $10 occupational privilege tax is due by Tuesday with a 10 percent penalty starting Wednesday. Tax collector George D. Gregg reports enforcement, with payment forms in the city building. About 345,000 of an estimated 193,000 to be collected has been turned in to date.

Service for Mrs Warriett Forsythe in New Brighton

Hallie Forsythe 79 of 3214 Sixth St New Brighton will have a 2 pm service tomorrow at Loyal B Young Funeral Home New Brighton. Friends may visit today 2 to 4 pm and to 4 pm. She died Wednesday at Beaver Valley General Hospital. Born July 12 1885 in Lawrence County she lived in the Beaver Valley for years. Survived by two daughters four sons a sister Mrs George Raney and a brother William Davidson of Enon Valley.

Two Youths Hurt in Skateboard Falls

Two youngsters, Kirley Ignatz aged 12 and Brad Salzman aged 7, were treated at Jameson Memorial Hospital after skateboard falls. Ignatz fractured her wrist, Salzman fractured his right knee. Both were released after treatment.

Activities At The Y MCA And YWCA Tonight

Activities run today at United Fund agencies the Y MCA and YWCA include non-swimmer and beginner swim instruction for ages 8 and up, intermediate swim, gym and pool access for adults, NAACP meeting in the gym, and open gym and swim times for various youth groups plus senior and junior high options.

Special quarters urged for neglected children in county detention home

Lawrence County Grand Jury yesterday recommended special quarters for neglected children kept overnight in the county detention home. Indictments were returned against 57 defendants and six charges were dismissed. The jurors also urged deartmentalizing the detention home and organized probation facilities. They proposed improving buildings with air conditioning courtrooms, a dishwasher for the County Home, better lights, window blinds, heat for the laundry, and a new sink and toilet on the third floor. In the courthouse the jurors noted general space shortage but said equipment was well cared for except jury rooms and restrooms which needed repairs.

Wilmington board to pick principal at Monday meeting

The Wilmington Area Joint School Board plans to select a new supervising principal at 8:30 p.m. Monday in the high school. Two candidates will be voted on for the vacancy created by Lewis Maraffie’s March resignation to take a post in Ohio.

Kerr named public relations director at Jameson Memorial

Mrs Kerr has been named to the new personnel and public relations director post at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Hospital president Lauri G Lauvelle announced the appointment noting 385 full time and about 143 part time employees. She began duties June 1 and has held prior roles at New Castle Business College WKST and a New York radio producer.

Girl Hurt When Car Hits Pole on North Croton Ave

A New Castle girl, Alone Love of 2724 Albert Sr., was injured Thursday afternoon after her car left the road and struck two utility poles on North Croton Ave. She suffered minor chin injuries and had teeth repaired. she was treated at Jameson Memoria Hospital and released. The mishap occurred as she attempted to adjust clothing.

Smiley Retires From Penn Power After 2 Years Local Work

Harry Smiley a building service employee with Pennsylvania Power Co in New Castle is retired effective June 1 under the pension plan after two years with the local company He began with Penn Power in February 1953 as a night watchman and became a janitor in May 1959 Prior to joining Penn Power he spent 26 years at Carnegie Steel and three years at Johnson Bronze Co Mr Smiley and his wife have five daughters and several grandchildren He plans to pursue hunting and fishing activities in retirement.

Shenango Voters Set Zoning Hearing And Road Bond

Shenango Township supervisors voted to hold a public hearing on proposed zoning ordinance changes after a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation. They approved borrowing $20 000 for road work until tax receipts begin and received a $150 contribution from the Progressive Council for township park improvements. A petition from six Woodview Drive families seeks street ordination.

Methodists hear report on finance in conference

GROVE CITY Dr A Culmer Schultz of Kane Pa former pastor of New Castle First Methodist Church led the Western Pennsylvania Conference financial report to more than 900 delegates. He cited more than 17 million in capital improvements last year and 3.2 million in contributions for higher education missions and care of the aged. The conference also welcomed Negro delegates for the first time in its history.

Borough to install more mercury lights downtown

Ellwood City Borough Council approved a $6 757 plan to install mercury vapor lights across downtown sections as part of an ongoing street lighting upgrade. The measure also boosted after hours service call rates to 5 dollars per hour and raised office wire replacement costs to 10 dollars.
