A 12 member joint legislative committee begins hearings in Pittsburgh to probe weaknesses in the milk control law and consider changes. Subpenas power allows access to dealers’ books as Sen Hawbaker and Rep Hetrick chair the probe. The hearings run through Friday and will move to another city.
The Union Township project faces court action as the New Castile Airport Authority seeks to remove Castle Aviation Co and Airways Inc from facilities in Lawrence County. Attorneys plan talks to resolve the dispute while opposing parties prepare counterclaims over contract validity and new agreements with Brund age Co. A separate report from Johnstown, Pa notes 29 year old Ralph Blough died at Fun City Park pool as autopsy is ordered.
New Wilmington market reports mixed gains across cattle, calves, pigs, and sheep. Slaughter steers and cows rose up to 25 cents, feeder classes posted 16.75 to 25.75 for steers and 16.90 to 23.50 for heifers, vealers and calves showed varied prices, hogs and sows rose, and spring lambs ranged at 27 to 90 dollars per head in broader ranges.
Ambrose Corwin, 91, a pioneer automobile salesman who built a single showroom into a global dealership, died Wednesday in Riverhead New York. Isidore Leviton, 79, an industrialist turned philanthropist, died Wednesday of a heart attack in New York. Dr. Leo J. Beaufort, 75, diplomat and Catholic spokesman, died Wednesday in the Netherlands.

CHARGE Inc directors voted to file for 43000 in federal tax funds to fund a nine month anti poverty survey in Lawrence County. The plan includes hiring an executive director for 7650 and assigning Penn State University to oversee the survey at about 15760, with the rest covering travel and supplies. Local funding would come from city county and Ellwood City, or via the Lawrence County United Fund, with possible city space cuts. The project aims to map poverty areas and propose relief steps, with September as a target start.

Danny Morrow, 10, of 37 N Beaver St, suffered first and second degree burns when a gasoline can exploded in his face at 1:30 p.m. yesterday. He was in Jameson Memorial Hospital in good condition. John Booker, 9, of 110 S Jefferson St, watched as a boy about 15 tossed a match into the two gallon can igniting fumes and a small flame. Weis cautioned youths to avoid construction sites and unfamiliar containers and to not play with matches.
Former New Castle Councilman E Gene Schweinsberg of Enon Valley Route 1 has been named assistant superintendent of the Lawrence County unit of the Pennsylvania Department of Highways, effective today. The appointment was made by Richard N McKee, county GOP chairman. Schweinsberg, with the highway department’s Franklin office for four months, was city councilman from 1956 to 1962 and previously advertising manager for Max Ludwig Advertising Co. Frank W Hill is county highways superintendent.
New Castle Area and Neshannock Township school districts may receive extra state subsidy if the school reorganization bill clears the Senate by July 1 1986. If approved the supplements would be about 25000 for Neshannock and 160000 for New Castle with districts already receiving aid. Also 880 Hilton Hotel workers strike in Pittsburgh as Local 237 and Local 188 members walk off before 7 am, leaving management staff to operate.
The New Castle Volunteer Fire Department was abolished at 10 24 a m by city council after months of controversy. The council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance sending the unit to oblivion. May 18 election results read 8 866 in favor of abolition and 2 590 to retain. State treasurer to receive funds now for paid firefighters pensions only.
James D. Beebe Jr., a 10 year old Philadelphia mechanic, was acquitted by a Chester County jury of assaulting a nun at the Laymen's Weekend Retreat League gathering in Malvern.
A speech by ex-Marine Brett at a community center urged vigilance against Communist influence targeting youths. He warned against greater trade with the Soviet bloc and calls to repeal the draft, arguing it would empower Russia and weaken U.S. defense. He urged patriotism, informed history, and action against bigotry, noting the church as a barrier to Communist takeover. A film, lunch, and a note on a Giants 1916 winning streak followed.
City police alerted local merchants to beware two men attempting to cash payroll checks stolen from a San Antonio firm. Checks made out to George R. Jolly for 244 and 198 dollars were cashed at stores, with a further attempt at two paint shops. A rental attempt at 92 Home St used a 67 dollar check as reference.
