The captain of a large liner reported allied destroyers sunk one German submarine with gunfire after a failed ram. A second submarine was likely shattered by depth charges, and a third fell within two hours. Naval rules prevent naming the ship or destroyer.
German forces renew a furious drive on the Noyon front making only slight headway as Teutons throw large reserves at the center. In New Castle County officials press to import Pittsburg coal, appealing to federal authorities to modify the fuel ruling limiting Pittsburgh coal into the area.
British forces advancing on the Picardy front pushed lines about half a mile to a depth of nearly a mile and a half south of Morlancourt. Australian troops led the operation, taking 233 German prisoners and capturing 21 machine guns and a trench mortar.
William Walker sues Margaret Shaffer as administratrix of Nathan C. Shaffer to recover 169 dollars. He says Shaffer agreed to bond him for a highway robbery charge in 1916 in exchange for 194 dollars plus 25 dollars for risk. Case was dismissed nolle pros with costs paid. Shaffer died and no debt writing exists. Walker seeks return of 169 dollars per verbal agreement.
A 12 o clock Youngstown Limited derailed after misrouting at North Beaver and Washington streets, cracking a telephone pole and injuring a passenger with a cheek cut. Conductor Schumaker and Motorman R J Moore, westbound on Washington, started after Beaver street switch and the rear section struck the pole, breaking the pole and halting traffic for over 30 minutes.
United States Marines push northwest of Chateau Thierry advancing over half a mile and seizing two German minenwerfers. Major Edward Cole leads the assault as heavy artillery and gas shells affect the battlefield. The Syracuse Brigade of the 9th and 23rd Infantry holds the Paris front flank near Chateau Thierry.
Marion Crowe of 115 Quest Street was reported to the health department this morning as having typhoid fever.
Mary Snyder a 45 year old resident of McKeesport was arrested in Pittsburgh on a charge of being a suspicious person. Police found 2500 dollars sewn into her dress and German propaganda materials in her home. Snyder refused to answer questions.
London reports a second attempt on Nicholai Lenin the Bolshevik premier of Russia. The driver in Lenin's car was killed in what is believed to be Moscow where the Bolshevik government seat has been moved. Protractor movement said to be spreading rapidly in Russia.
New Castle residents who failed to pay income tax when offices opened here are sending checks to the Pittsburg office. Taxes must be paid by June 15. If unpaid, a second notice is issued and after ten days the tax becomes delinquent with a five percent penalty and one percent monthly interest.
The Public Safety committee supports opening a Community Canning club led by the women's committee to teach economical canning of fruits and vegetables. A domestic science expert will instruct participants and jars may be sold at cost. The club will operate at a suitable headquarters with morning and afternoon sessions in summer.
Chairman W A Eakin calls a Republican county committee meeting at the court house Saturday afternoon for organization. New committeemen were elected at the recent primary with some veterans re-elected. The main issue is choosing a chairman with S Elmer Crawford the only declared candidate from the fourth precinct. In Perry township first district A W Hazen and W E Wright tied, likely decided by lot. Plans for the fall campaign and full party support were also to be discussed.
Plans finalize for Baltimore and Ohio passenger trains to run over Pittsburg and Lake Erie tracks from here to Pittsburg. A switch is being installed near the city’s lower end to route trains from Baltimore and Ohio onto the Pittsburg and Lake Erie tracks.
Mrs Glendening appeared before the mayor on a drunkenness charge. This was her seventh such hearing and the mayor fined her ten dollars with costs. in default she will serve five days as a city janitress at the city building.
Citizens traveling must pay three cents per mile for train travel with the new fare increase in force since yesterday. The raise applies to all fare types including commuter mileage, parlor cars, and Pullmans. unused tickets will be redeemed for their amount paid.
The Johnson building owners will hire a girl to operate the elevator at their structure. Following the earlier example of the Safe Deposit and Trust company building the use of women in elevator work has proven successful. It is expected most elevator jobs in the city will soon be held by women and girls.
A white man about 50 was found in Turtle Creek near Port Perry with a blue handkerchief tied around his mouth and throat. Officials have no identify and see this as another unresolved murder in the county’s recent string of mysteries.
The Rotary club inaugurated its new officers at yesterday’s noonday luncheon. J. Lee Mc Fate was elected president with Dr. Loyal W. Wilson as vice president, Carl E. Paisley secretary, and Jos. S. Rice treasurer. Rev. Williamson of Highland U P church spoke on The White Elephant.
More than 60 large passenger and freight vessels and numerous sailing ships arrived at an Atlantic port despite German submarine activity. In the last 48 hours, 31 steamers totaling 100000 tons were reported safe in home waters, including 70000 tons arriving today. Two large trans Atlantic liners were among the arrivals.
Survivors of the American freighter Pinar Del Rio reach Norfolk with claims that a submarine was accompanied by a six thousand ton mother ship and that it sank two American salvage vessels. Officials remain cautious, with no confirmed submarine sighting or sinking. Navy chasers converge on the Virginia Capes as investigations continue.
In Washington on June 11 agitation for war against Turkey and Bulgaria was revived in congress and will be taken up by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Reports reach congress amid denials that Germany is using Bulgarian troops on the western front.
At court today Thomas Deep was charged with assault and battery and Jesse Reed faced larceny of a watch. Both juries returned not guilty verdicts.
Paris reports a French counter attack recaptured Mery on the Noyon Montdidier front while Germans pushed other areas. French center resisted heavy German pressure as battles raged along the Oise front with gains on the right and Dutch. The fourth German offensive is described as a second Verdun with immense losses as fighting continues toward Compiègne and Paris.
Mrs Joseph Studebaker aged 68 died in Jacksonville Butler County. Funeral arrangements are pending with local authorities.
