New engine for Western Allegheny line reaches New Castle
A new locomotive built at Schenectady will serve on the Western Allegheny between New Castle and Kaylor, arriving soon and sent to Greenville for finishing. It will join two others in operation for passenger and freight service as rail expansion and bridge projects progress in the region. The Pennsylvania company reports 1906 fare and freight gains with record passenger totals and high earnings, while pay cars and ore handling trains continue to move cargo along the lake branch.

State covers rise in teachers' salaries under new law
Lawrence county and other districts face only state funded increases for professional and provisional certificate holders. The law requires districts to report teacher counts and pay levels for 1906 and the year reported, with October filings. Excess funds come from the state appropriation, then distributed to districts. The state superintendent will disburse the surplus to districts with higher salaries.

White Elephant Emporium property to be sold next Thursday
Ira S. Fulkerson, trustee in bankruptcy for the Emporium company, will try again to sell the building next Thursday. Several out of town parties have looked at the property aiming to start a large department store. The rent, taxes, and insurance total about 3,500 per year, with ground rent 62.50 monthly, making the venture costly and the highest offer already 21,000 likely insufficient to justify ownership.
