Washington June 6 The senate may decide if Bishop James Cannon Jr should tell its lobby committee about his anti Smith activities in 1928. A push seeks Senate authority to question Cannon on any subject, as Cannon defies questions and withdraws as a witness. Continued on page two.
Cadet Lieut. Thomas Brandenburgh Hughes, captain of Midshipman Company No. 1, will marry Alberta Ely of Kansas after graduation to receive the traditional flag gift no longer awarded by the academy. The school barred the customary kisses for the top commander, but Hughes and Ely’s vows remain underway as their romance began in Johnson County, Kansas.
Advance detail and the Pennsylvania Brigade Sons of Veterans Reserve organize a tented city near Scotland Lane for the state encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic and affiliated groups. About 125 tents will house some 800 uniformed men as officers and ex servicemen set up for arrivals from across Pennsylvania. Major O J MacPherson Captain Leroy Stout and Captain E P Smyser lead preparations with Company K and local veterans. Open camp is scheduled for Sunday with activities through the following Saturday.
Residents were puzzled by martial music heard last night. The source was the Veterans Drum Corps practicing atop the cathedral two miles away, mistaken at first for a radio loudspeaker. Frosts have wilted leaves, and hot weather drove people to swim in hoses and wear bathing suits. Cars from Missouri Rhode Island Texas Florida and California entered New Castle. A Pennsylvanian Highway bulletin notes 39.34 miles of concrete poured last week and 141 miles this season. The night cooled barely with a low of 71 after a 93 day high.
Weather statistics show a 24 hour period ending at 9 am with a maximum of 93 and a minimum of 71. No precipitation occurred and river stage measured 3.9 feet.

The Graf Zeppelin passes over Mallorca bound for Friedrichshafen on its final tricontinental flight from Seville through Europe, South America and the United States. Weather keeps her slightly south of course as Captain Eckener hopes to land in Friedrichshafen midmorning amid variable winds.
Dispatches from London report British forces attacked near Peshawar driving 7000 to 15000 Afridis into small escape groups. Peshawar remained under armed guard as heavy gunfire echoed from hillside clashes. Casualties not yet reported.

Murrow D. Wells of the Shenango Plant has been promoted to the Accounting Department of the General Office in Pittsburgh effective June 1. He came to New Castle in 1914 as Works Auditor and has spent years at New Kensington and Martins Ferry before returning to the New Castle Plant and later Shenango. His civic work is noted as highly active and influential.
Tong War violence flared in New York with Louis Lee a Brooklyn laundryman shot dead in the rear of his shop. This brings the two day Tong deaths in the city to three.

Nearly 11 000 students finish the year as the New Castle Public Schools dismiss for a three month vacation. Teachers begin departure by tomorrow morning while seniors receive diplomas tonight. The district notes a successful year and reflects on hosting the Pennsylvania State Educational Association last December.
Henry Ford, arriving in Philadelphia after dining with Edward T. Stotesbury, predicted a quicker recovery from the recent business depression. He attributed the upturn to stock-market folly ending and to more people back at work, signaling improved business conditions.
Westchester June 6 Mrs Mary Williams Starr 35 shot her husband Charles 29 through the brain and then killed herself in their home near West Grove about 15 miles west of here. Starr died later and is in West Grove Hospital in dying condition. Alfred Brodsky 20 found the bodies while employed by Starr. A note to Clement Starr blamed a recent word part event near Newark Delaware for the act.
An inquiry opened in Augusta Maine into the death of two student aviators, Francis A. Cote 19 of Franklin Massachusetts and Clyde G. Maxifield 22 of West Benton Maine, who perished when their plane ran out of fuel and plunged to the ground yesterday.
Commencement week activities at New Castle Senior High School culminate tonight with 209 graduates receiving diplomas from Daniel B. Woolcock president of the board of education at the formal graduation ceremony.
Officials clarify a call for photographs limited to Civil War veterans who currently reside in Lawrence County. The images are sought for the upcoming Grand Army of the Republic encampment in New Castle where the county will host visiting veterans.
