Penn Power sued over sulfur dioxide at New Castle Plant
The EPA sues Pennsylvania Power Company in Pittsburgh federal court alleging ongoing sulfur dioxide emission violations at the New Castle Plant since before August 7, 1977. Penn Power seeks cessation of violations and civil penalties up to 25,000 dollars per day post August 7, 1977. The company has installed $39.7 million pollution controls and is weighing desulfurization versus burning low-sulfur coal with a potential $85 million upgrade and $15 million annual cost impact.
