Ethics panel okays land sale by Turnpike chairman
Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Chairman Jack Greenblat won Ethics Commission approval to negotiate a lease or sale of 2.5 acres near Allentown to Howard Johnson's Co. while remaining barred from related meetings. The panel ruled communications with Howard Johnson's must be routed around him and that use of the property for Turnpike operations would be prohibited if negotiations succeed. Greenblat noted the matter predates the 1979 ethics law and described his independence and desire to protect his reputation amid ties to the concessionaire and a prior breakup of its monopoly on the turnpike.
