The Justice Department approves Pittsburgh Post Gazette's plan to buy rival Pittsburgh Press. The Post Gazette aims for a seven day morning paper starting Jan 18, while the Press closes and about 80 of its 212 editorial staff join the Post Gazette.

Lawrence County Democratic Chairman Peter A. Vessella files a defamation lawsuit against U.S. Representative-elect Ron Klink in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court. He alleges Klink made false statements about a financial contribution request in a New Castle News article and a WKST radio ad before the November election, seeking more than 20,000 in damages.
The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts and the Lawrence County Historical Society will receive no money from the county next year.
