Plan Memorial for Soldi ers 10 Cost Half Million

Plans crystallized at a Saturday meeting in City Hall for Lawrence County to erect a memorial building. Aiming for a great auditorium banquet hall armory relics library and reception rooms the project would cost at least a half million dollars. Wilson Plans Return Before March 2

The White House announced President Wilson will come back to the United States before the current Congress adjourns on March 2 to act on last minute bills. If needed, he may then return to Europe to resume participation in the peace conference.

Wilson Seeks No European Alliances in Free Trade Hall

President Wilson declares the United States will join no power bloc not including all nations pledged to world peace. He says America has no stake in European politics or in any balance of power, speaking to cheers after the freedom of the city ceremony in Manchester. New Hampshire Governor Keyes canceled a visit to finish state business and planned a farewell address to the legislature. Sharon Doctor Dies On Train

Dr. William M. Lewis a Sharon Pa physician and Sharon Sanitarium owner died on a Pennsylvania passenger train between Pittsburgh and New Castle from heart trouble. He was 57 and unmarried. He leaves his mother in Wilkes-Barre and a sister Mrs Mandmeister. He once led X-ray aid to the U S during WWI and mentored Dr T W Williams. His remains were taken to Offutt and Company for arrangements.

Armenian Relief Drive Highlights Christmas Service

Stereopticon pictures of 108 boys from the First M E church and Sunday school formed a feature of the evening service. A collection taken for Syrian and Armenian relief exceeded $300. Children gave speeches and songs during the program.

King George to Visit America and Swap Warship Visits

City Flu Hospital Seen Closing As Patient Count Drops

Councilman W C Shanafelt reported only 14 influenza patients in the Emergency hospital with several ready to leave in a few days. He suggested possibly discontinuing the hospital within a week and notifying doctors no new patients would be received. The city will keep equipment for future use.

Big Increase In American Ship Tonnage

In Paris Edward Nash Hurley says the United States will hold about 35 percent of world merchant tonnage after the war while England controls 50 percent and the remainder comes from Scandinavia. He notes plans to take over 30 to 40 ships from White Star, about 700000 tons, for troop movement and to redirect them to bring home American troops. He assures no marooning of Americans and that transport will normalize as troops return.

Strike Threatens At Milwaukee

Milwaukee officials including Governor Philip and Mayor Herne meet with Milwaukee Traction officials to avert a threatened strike by 3,600 traction employees on New Year’s Day demanding a four cent an hour wage increase.

Labor Union Official Shot in Chicago Violence

John W. W. DiGiovanni, business agent of the Hadcarriers union, was murdered late at night returning from a Chicago Federation of Labor meeting where a new political party was launched. He was shot seven times by two men from a hallway near his home. four in the chest, one in the arm, one in the breast, and one in the left wrist. Police hunt two Bolshevik faction members tied to the disturbance at a union gathering honoring Italy's labor leaders.

Samuel Hopkins charged with felonious assault and battery by Chief Edward Elder was held for court after a hearing before Alderman Mantz. He is charged in the shooting of William Davis who is on the road to recovery.
