U S weather statistics for the 24 hour period ending at nine this morning show a maximum temperature of 13 and a minimum of 4 below zero with no precipitation. River stage stands at 6 feet. Statistics for the same date a year ago note a maximum of 40 and a minimum of 26.
International News Service reports San Diego authorities granted a mass flight plan for six U S Navy planes to fly non stop from San Diego to Honolulu in January as the first leg of a proposed round the world mission. Matthew Gunton of New Castle is confirmed as Deputy Civil Works Administrator for Lawrence county. The appointment was sent to Administrator L. B. Round by State Administrator Eric H. Biddle. Gunton, a retired businessman active in civic affairs, has served on the Planning Commission and leads the local board and state Pennsylvania Planning Commission. He begins duties immediately.
United States Senator William G. McAdoo of California left Atlanta Pennsylvania in his private plane at 7 20 a m for the opening of the new congress. He will not proceed to Washington if his daughter Mrs Edward S Cowless at her New York home worsens. Telegrams indicate she is much improved.
The worst blizzard of the winter raged across Michigan copper country and the Michigan Wisconsin border. Calumet reported about 16 below zero while Eagle River Wisconsin recorded 18 below.
County Controller R C McCaslin through his attorney Orville Brown moved to quash a mandamus by Thayer Co demanding 7800 dollars as first payment for architect fees on a new courthouse. The motion argues lack of legal basis for the contract and that the amount is excessive. Decision to be announced later.
Fire Chief H. Clare Stockman found three hydrants frozen in the downtown district this morning. The water company was notified and workers thawed them, after which firemen drained them to prevent a recurrence. Miss Sylvia Goldfeder of Ellwood City will depart for Harrisburg to assume duties as a State Liquor Control stenographer.

Mr and Mrs William Appli and their two children fled their six room home near Book's woods in Mahoning township at 1 o clock this morning as flames spread rapidly from a furnace originated fire. Neighbors arrived too late to save the structure owned by Mrs Ella Bechtel of Pittsburgh. the family sought refuge with Mr Appli's parents and neighbors promised partial restitution.
