Bitter winds and heavy snow drifts cripple Pennsylvania roads as subzero temps mount. State highway crews of 3,700 workers with nearly 1,000 plows clear primary routes while western trains face delays. Adams and Franklin counties see only secondary roads passable.
A local report notes West Washington street grade iced over with ashes to prevent skidding. Cars slid and one halved spin near the Pennsylvania station driveway. Merchants report many log electric trains sold for Christmas, while Holly tree stands out in snow at Mercer and Chant. Near-zero temperatures mark the coldest spell this season with readings around one to zero, and residents report 48 below in places. Cars on North Jefferson street were pushed as they refused to start, with foot conditions worsening.

Scranton police captain Albert Gleason and robber suspect John J Herbenor were killed in a gun battle at a hotel. Herbenor, wanted in Binghamton, tried to escape via a fire escape and fell two stories to a snow covered roof. Detective George Donaldson and Gleason engaged the suspect and shots were fired.
Marjorie Gould Drexel, 17, daughter of Anthony J. and Mrs. Drexel, heiress to the Drexel millions, was found near her Nassau home in the Bahamas after wandering a wooded area. She was exhausted and in shock but unharmed.
Delegates from the New Castle chapter of the Pennsylvania State Educational Association left Tuesday night for Philadelphia to attend the annual state convention today. They include Dr. C. C. Green superintendent Alma Locke Highland school Mildred Canon Croton Verna Wilfert George Washington Junior high. The convention is expected to be large with topics on school financing consolidation of small districts and teaching standards on the agenda.
The New Wilmington borough authorized the sale of intoxicating liquors after state approval. Wy ell s Lodge of New Wilmington operated by Stanley Whieldon received a license, with beer up to 3.2 percent allowed under a November vote, and plans to begin beer sales soon despite prior anti beer results. Mrs Whieldon stated hard liquors would not be sold until the new year and that beer would start Thursday.
President Roosevelt moves toward a potentially short Congress session starting January 3. He plans to push a roughly 2.6 billion dollar regular budget plus additional financing to support recovery, while tax law revisions loom. The aim is to advance existing programs with two upcoming messages on the nation’s state and on financial recommendations.
The state liquor control board announced clerk appointments for New Castle and Ellwood City stores. New Castle clerks include Harold Harris Andrew J. Hannon Joseph F. Diffley Hyman Levine and Alan Kay. Ellwood City clerks include Charles R. Dicks Robert W. Jones Frank M. Demanso Angelo D. Gregorio. One Ellwood City stenographer named. none for New Castle. Treasury Department representatives visited Curwensville to urge sheriff to release stone mined for the New Castle post office from liens. Creditors of the quarry company have filed attachments and obtained liens against the stone and the quarry’s other property. Swick, at the request of Congressman Swick, says the Treasury aims to lift those liens on the post office stone.
Mr and Mrs Charles Di Weg gint of St Nort MH street learned their former sister in law Mrs Maude Courtney of Knox Pa was seriously injured in a Brookville hospital incident. Authorities report the serious condition as of today.
