Budget OK'd by council trims staff and funds
The City Council approved an 8.1 million dollar budget with no tax increase, cutting several positions including an 18,000 plumbing inspector and a 12,085 per capita tax collector. Delinquent tax collector post was also eliminated, recreation and building inspector roles reduced to part time, and layoffs possible if retirements don’t save the year.

Voyager pilots land after world circle flight without refuel
Edwards Air Force Base Calif. United Press International reports Jeana Yeager and Dick Rutan completed a nonstop global circumnavigation in the Voyager, landing at 8 05 a m PST after 216 hours aloft. The craft weighed 2300 pounds upon landing and may be housed at the Smithsonian Institution.

IRS to ship 1986 tax forms after Christmas delays feared
The IRS will mail 85 million 1986 income tax forms the day after Christmas, with 17 million address-label postcards to aid taxpayers.
