Secretary Baker and other members of President Wilsons cabinet issued messages of peace on earth and goodwill toward men for Christmas. The season was marked by the widespread hope for harmony and an end to conflict as the country engages in international relief and diplomacy efforts.
City leaders and residents discuss combining New Castle City Building Lawrence County Court House and a central auditorium into one complex. The proposal includes a county history archive and a memorial for military and naval heroes funded by public subscription if needed.
R A McKinney envisions a centrally located 4000 seat auditorium in New Castle with a convention hall. He urges bringing top speakers concerts and banquets at affordable prices for all, plus a basement for feeds meetings rest areas and library facilities to support county activities.

The old National Guard will be eliminated by demobilization as members who entered federal service under the July 23 1917 proclamation revert to civilian status upon federal discharge. General Ansell says officers and men will not return to National Guard status after federal service ends, a view approved by General March and Secretary Baker.
Bloomington Illinois December 24 The death of Charles Johnson a farmer near Woodhull from a gunshot wound raises the hunting accident toll in Central Illinois to fifteen for the season.
Death record entries include Hiram Turner 80 of 359 East North and Margaret Miles Craig 86 of 138 East Park. Also listed are Alvin A Watson New Castle and Lillie Link 24 Greenville along with Chester Fandoze 46 216 First Street Dell W Majors 52 in Wurtemburg Thomas Mains 38 Ellwood City Pazanna Zona 35 Ellwood City and Joe Hrvatin 2 Bessemer Pa.
In Hamburg authorities report thirty rioters killed and 83 wounded after revolutionary troops opened fire on a drunken mob of about 250 soldiers looting shops. The incident is linked to rising unrest with thousands of German strikers joining the extremists.
Chicago December 24 Dr Jeannette Throckmorton told the American Public Health Association that American women must give up high heels. She described heels as harmful to health and development and urged a firmer, more soldierly walk and carriage like that of returning fighters.
A reader asks which Lawrence county family will be named in the Christmas Roll Call. In Allegheny county a 17 member family has 17 crosses on its Red Cross service flag and the question asks if Lawrence can equal that record.

He urges ships built with protective funnels and ventilators and says ships will run on oil and electricity. He predicts larger calibre artillery replacing Seventy Fives with longer ranges.
David Young recounts his near fatal voyage aboard the Tuscania when a German U boat sank the troopship off Ireland on February 5. He was traveling with motor mechanics bound for England in the aviation service as a torpedo struck amid darkness and rough seas among other ships including the Baltic carrying 7,000 American men.
President Wilson commuted two military desertion sentences. Ernest F. Laub of the 163rd Depot Brigade at Camp Dodge Iowa and George Jacobs of the 150th Infantry at Camp Shelby Mississippi were sentenced to death by musketry but were reduced to dishonorable discharge with forfeiture of pay and 20 years hard labor.
Premier Lloyd George has arrived in London to prepare for talks with President Wilson and state ministers on Friday. The discussions are expected to foster close Anglo American cooperation on naval policies and clarify the freedom of the seas as the president's arrival nears.
