Shoppers bid farewell as M and M Market changes hands

In NEW WILMINGTON McCrumb’s M and M Market will close after Dec 27 and be renamed Gilliland’s Market. Marie McCrumb Kauffman and her father Guy McCrumb, longtime manager and owner, sell the business largely for family reasons and illness. Jeffrey Gilliland, a trained meat cutter, purchases the store and will take over operations.

Shanghai orders ban on further unauthorized protests

Shanghai authorities, after three days of pro democracy demonstrations by tens of thousands of students, banned further unauthorized protests. A large banner march toward People's Square defied the ban as leaders vowed to press on. About 10,000 people gathered in the square amid police barricades, while officials and students prepared meetings on demands including detainee releases and accountability for police actions.

Chad report claims 400 Libyans die in fighting

Chad state radio said government troops and a breakaway Libyan rebel faction killed 400 Libyan soldiers and recaptured a border town in northern Chad. Libyan agency denied the claim. reports also spoke of Libyans captured and 17 tanks destroyed amid a major Libyan attack on Bardai Zouar and Wour in the Tibesti region.
