City officials note motorists drive against current traffic on Highland avenue hill risking head on collisions as lights sporadically fail. Streets department spreads ashes to treat icy streets. ten thousand tons stockpiled from local mills have been used. Police receive calls about hill safety while Christmas displays grow in New Castle area.
Mrs. Rose Donofrio testifies about a string of alleged incidents leading to the September 10 shooting of her son in law James Aiello. Objections by counsel shape what the jury may hear as she details accusations against Aiello including a bogus wedding, control over her daughter Teresa, and charges of social disease.

Henry Cowden 40 a Coitsville resident died at Youngstown hospital after shooting his wife Anna Cowden Friday. He had been unconscious most of the time since admission and admitted the slaying but gave no motive. Coroner Hauser indicated a homicide verdict with self-inflicted action. Body sent to Davidson's funeral home Struthers.
In Philadelphia on December 15 police released five unemployed youths after questioning in the murder of 38 year old widow Mrs Wilma V. Carpenter and assault on her business associate Mary Griffin 22 in Camp Hill. Suspects could not be identified by the home residents Thomas McNutt and Emma Anderson. The cook and chauffeur provided contrasting leads as they recalled a man who resembled the killer.
Three American survivors of the Panay incident arrived in Shanghai to reject Japanese claims that bad visibility caused the attack. James Marshall Collier's magazine writer F H Vines and J L Hodge fireman's mate reported visibility was excellent. The Panay opened fire as bombs dropped and survivors described machine gun fire from Japanese launches during the sinking.
Philadelphia report says the pistol used by a sex maniac in the Mrs. Carpenter murder and Mary Griffin attack was recovered from a culvert a quarter mile from the victim's home. Harrisburg reported that fresh 1938 license plates are legal to use starting today. Secretary J Griffith Boardman said over 2 million motorists may use the plates and more than 750,000 registrations have been issued, up 100,000 from last year. Daily applications reach about 50,000.
Agatha Grove Midgley of New York, 23, told police she is the mother of a baby left at a foundling home. She previously left another child at a separate home. She said her husband abandoned her eight months earlier and she could not support the children.
Ellwood City officials report $660.15 in contributions to the Anti Tuberculosis League as of today. Chairman C. Z. Bell urges residents to send in dollars for seals to reach a $1000.90 goal. Citizens may obtain extra stamps at the Chamber of Commerce offices. Industries and civic clubs have funded health bonds to aid disease prevention.
Firefighters battled a blaze at 9 10 this morning at Lewis Zeigler 8 Leasure Avenue caused by crossed wires. The fire spread to the coal bin, damaged the floor and set cans of paint on a shelf under the floor, creating heavy smoke. Insurance covers the home but not the furniture.
Miss Rachel Almira Hope aged 87 died in New Wilmington. She was a longtime resident and is survived by relatives. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
